Prince George’s County is the second largest county in the State of Maryland, and has a population of nearly 900,000 residents. It boasts a diverse and educated population with one-third of its residents holding baccalaureate and advanced degrees. Additionally, in some parts of the county, the unemployment rate is relatively low and median incomes are over $100,000. In these areas, the future looks bright for many of its residents. Yet in other communities, families struggle to meet basic needs and many residents lack the education and skills needed to ensure a good quality of life. Despite the county’s unprecedented population and economic growth, one in ten residents of Prince George’s lives in poverty. In these communities, unemployment rates exceed 10% and the number of disconnected youth – those without a high school diploma and a job – has surged to nearly 7,000 young people.
There is a lot of work to be done and there are heroes living here who are doing it – tackling the tough issues and helping to make our county stronger. The Civic Leadership Awards Program was established in 2006 to recognize, honor, and promote this kind of outstanding community leadership in Prince George’s County. The award recognizes individuals and organizations who too often are unrecognized for their important contributions—those who are the unsung heroes who have quietly, tirelessly, and unselfishly demonstrated outstanding commitment and service to improving and enhancing the quality of life in our community
