2014 Civic Leadership Honoree: Dr. Charlene M. Dukes
Dr. Charlene Dukes is the first female president of Prince George’s Community College (PGCC). A true champion of quality education and workforce development, Dr. Dukes has led many effective community partnerships including the establishment of the first middle college high school in Maryland in partnership with Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGPCS). Her leadership is consistently called-upon by key stakeholders of government and the private sector. She recently co-chaired a transition team that conducted a review of PGCPS operations and hired a new CEO for PGCPS.
By fostering partnerships and leveraging funds through the PGCC Foundation, Dr. Dukes has helped to position Prince George’s County as a thriving community, including establishing the Center for Minority Business Development, a $5 million initiative to increase the capacity of minority businesses in the County focused on the construction industry.
Dr. Dukes provides leadership on the boards of many community organizations in Prince George’s County and the State of Maryland. She serves as president of the Maryland State Board of Education, chair-elect of the American Association of Community Colleges, and was most recently appointed as a Trustee of the Community Foundation for the National Capital Region.
