Sharing Prince George’s County awards $646,500 to nonprofits serving Prince George’s County, Maryland

The Community Foundation in Prince George’s County (CFPGC) is awarding $646,500 in grants to 48 nonprofit organizations serving Prince George’s County, MD through its newest initiative, Sharing Prince George’s County (Sharing PGC). CFPGC is a local office of The Community Foundation for the National Capital Region, the largest funder of nonprofit organizations in the metropolitan Washington region.

Sharing PGC represents a collection of philanthropic funds that provide financial support to local community-based nonprofit organizations. The initiative helps donors to strategically leverage their resources to support the nonprofit organizations that are addressing the county’s most critical needs.

The Sharing Prince George’s initiative is a clear demonstration of the Community Foundation’s role as a convener in the philanthropic community. By providing a mechanism for corporate members of our community to pool resources so that grants can then be distributed directly to nonprofits doing important work in our community, the Community Foundation is leveraging its expertise to create a better Prince George’s.” says William M. Shipp, Chair of the Advisory Board in Prince George’s County and Trustee of the Community Foundation for the National Capital Region.

These resources allow our tremendously dedicated nonprofit organizations to continue providing services to, addressing the needs of, and otherwise providing invaluable assistance to Prince George’s County residents, says Gregory K. Wells, Community Foundation donor and reviewer. Mr. Wells adds, “The Community Foundation’s grant- making process combines professional evaluation and analysis of grant requests with input and direction from key community leaders in tune with community needs. This ensures that the result of the grant-making process is an equitable and effective distribution of grant funds.”

Currently, Sharing PGC consists of four funds: the National Harbor Community Outreach Grant Fund, the Prince George’s Neighbor to Neighbor Fund, the Transforming Neighborhoods Initiative Fund for Community Innovation, and the Walton Community Fund for Prince George’s County.

Established by the Peterson Companies and Prince George’s County Government, the National Harbor Community Outreach Grant Fund (NHCOGF) provides program and general operating support to nonprofit organizations that demonstrate success in providing safety net, education, and/or workforce development services for residents in Prince George’s County, Maryland.

Established by The Community Foundation, the Prince George’s Neighbor to Neighbor Fund aims to increase economic security for residents of Prince George’s County by providing support for safety-net programs which help individuals in crisis to lift themselves out of poverty, educational activities that prepare young people for a successful transition to adulthood, and workforce development opportunities that will help residents earn a living-wage.

The Transforming Neighborhood Initiative (TNI) Fund for Community Innovation was established by The Office of the Prince George’s County Executive and Prince George’s County Public Schools. The Fund provides general operating, program funding and capacity building support to school- and community-based organizations that currently provide quality free and/or affordable programming for youth and families living in Prince George’s County’s TNI communities of Langley Park, East Riverdale/Bladensburg, Kentland/Palmer Park, Suitland/Coral Hills, Hillcrest Heights/Marlow Heights, and Glassmanor/Oxon Hill.

Established by the Walton Group of Companies, the Walton Community Fund for Prince George’s County provides program support to community service organizations located in Prince George’s County. The goal of the Walton Community Fund for Prince George’s County is to meet the basic human and educational needs of children and families in Prince George’s County by supporting and strengthening the delivery of essential services.

Through Sharing PGC, organizations can submit one proposal for all funding opportunities, streamlining the application timeline and process for the nonprofit applicants. Proposals are evaluated on a competitive basis, with recommendations for funding determined by a formal review committee comprised of community leaders representing diverse local sectors and populations. Final decisions are approved by the board of trustees of The Community Foundation for the National Capital Region.

Collectively, the 48 grant recipients will provide services to every district in Prince George’s County and help to address the Community Foundation’s goal of attaining economic security for residents through education, workforce development and safety-net services.
