Cheryl Petty Garnette

Executive Director,
Ivy Community Charities of Prince George’s County

Cheryl Petty Garnette has served as the Executive Director of The Ivy Community Charities of Prince George’s County, Inc. (Charities) since January 2008. Charities was established as the non-profit, 501(c)(3) arm of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Iota Gamma Omega Chapter in 1986.  The organization provides tutoring, mentoring and leadership development from elementary through high school, training for parents, scholarships for high school seniors, social activities for the elderly, and a host of workshops on financial literacy, health and wellness, the arts, civic engagement and social justice. Through her efforts, Charities earned the Maryland Nonprofits Standards for Excellence Accreditation in 2022. Under her leadership, Charities received more than $2.5 million in grants from State and local sources over the past five years. 

Cheryl’s vision to create the Ivy Village Incubator for Nonprofit Excellence (Ivy VINE) is Charities’ initiative to pay it forward by developing a two-year capacity building program for small emerging nonprofits that includes training, coaching, networking and the tools to earn Maryland Nonprofits Standards for Excellence recognition. The first cohort of Ivy VINE nonprofit partners was selected in 2023 and are expected to graduate in 2024.  In her duplicate role as a Maryland Nonprofits Licensed Consultant and CEO of Garnette Consulting, Cheryl provides technical assistance to nonprofits across the country including strategic planning, grants management, Executive leadership, Board development, and program evaluation. 

Cheryl earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics and a Master of Arts degree in Measurement and Statistics, both from the University of Maryland, College Park.  She retired from the U.S. Department of Education in January 2011 after 31 years where she served as the Director of the Office of Technology in Education Programs. 

Cheryl serves as the Director of Christian Education at Seaton Memorial AME Church in Lanham, MD, was honored as the First Trailblazing Woman of the Year in 2008 and served as the Chair of the church’s 100th Anniversary in 2011. In 2018 she received the Community Service Award from the Kappa Epsilon Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.; and in 2016 she received two community service awards:  Women Always Giving to Others (WAGO) Award by the Partners Achieving Success, Inc. and Prince George’s County’s Office of the County Executive and Commission for Women WE3 (Women Educated, Engaged and Empowered) Community Servant Leader Award.  She was appointed to serve for four years on Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.’s International Foundations Committee which advised the organization’s chapters that established nonprofit arms (2018-2022) and was named the Silver Star of the Year for the North Atlantic Region in 2019, an honor bestowed upon members with 25 -49 years who exemplify excellence in their service to the organization. 

Cheryl’s favorite pastimes include scrapbooking; collecting Black dolls, Black art and Black memorabilia; traveling; shopping; and entertaining family and friends at her home.


2023 Nonprofit Leader of the Year Nominees

Sandy Washington

Executive Director,
Community Outreach & Development Corp (CDC)

Mrs. Sandy Washington has worked and lived in the community for over 37 years addressing its needs. She is a wife, mother of three girls, grandmother of 11 and great grandmother of 3. In 1998, she co-founded LifeStyles of Maryland Foundation, Inc., whose mission is to empower people and assist in providing a better quality of life through social awareness and community development. In 2008 Ms. Washington also became the Executive Director of Community Outreach and Development, CDC located in Prince George’s County, Maryland. Our mission is to serve as a one-stop-shop of community and economic development resources to support individual and family self-sufficiency.

Mrs. Washington is a Certified Nonprofit Executive (CNE). She has successfully served as a field supervisor for BSW and MSW students for five colleges and universities for the last twelve years. She serves as the Vice-President of the Maples Foundation and the Maples Limited Liability Corp, in addition to serving on the Board of Directors for End Hunger in Charles County, and Real Women, Inc. She also serves on the Indian Head Grocery Initiative Advisory Council and chairs the regional Homeless Coalition representing Charles, Calvert, and St. Mary’s counties. Last year she was appointed by the Secretary of Health as a member of the Maryland Department of Health’s Advisory Committee on Minority Health. She has worked closely with the Prince George’s County Health Department to address social determinants to health in the 20743 community. In 2021 through the encouragement of other businesswomen she became a published author. In 2022, she became a member of the Society for Spirituality and Social Work.

Mrs. Washington has received several gubernatorial appointments including Membership of the Judicial Nominating Committee; the Maryland Efficient Grant Application Council; and, as a cancer survivor, to serve as a Commissioner on the Medical Cannabis Commission for the state. She also has received: Woman of the Year; Charles County Commission for Women Trailblazer Award; and Congressional Recognition as an exceptional business. Mrs. Washington is a Paul Harris Fellow and was inducted into the Community Foundation of Southern Maryland’s Philanthropy Hall of Fame.

During her local, state, and federal committee appointments, Mrs. Washington has stayed close to the community and brings to the forefront the needs of the community with a special place in her heart for equitable access to a healthy quality of life.

 

Lisa Butler Mcdougal

Executive Director,
Sowing Empowerment & Economic Development (SEED)

Lisa Butler McDougal is the President/CEO of Sowing Empowerment & Economic Development, Inc. (SEED), a non-profit organization headquartered in Prince George’s County, Maryland, with an office in Detroit, MI. SEED provides emergency food, financial counseling, education and training while promoting self-sufficiency and empowerment directly to families and communities.  Through community services, education, & community development, SEED creates environments where all individuals are empowered, all children are nurtured, families are strengthened and communities are transformed.  

McDougal has provided community and organizational development, strategic planning, capital resource development, communications, media outreach and public relations counsel to corporations and non-profit organizations for more than 35 years. 

She served as the Director of Communications and Development for the NHP Foundation and coordinated minority outreach communications for Freddie Mac.  McDougal has also provided community outreach and public relations counsel as an Account Executive with Manning, Selvage and Lee/Washington, Porter Novelli and as Vice President of Media Relations with Walls Communications. She also served as the Media Director for the Children’s Defense Fund, a nationally recognized child advocacy organization.

McDougal is a board member of the Central Kenilworth Avenue Revitalization Community Development Corporation (CKAR) and the Maryland Alliance of Public Charter Schools.  She is also the co-chair of the Coalition for Homeownership Preservation in Prince George’s County, was listed in 50 Who’s Who in Prince George’s County and is a member of the Prince George’s Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

She received a B.A. in Journalism from Bowie State University, completed a Nonprofit Management fellowship at The College of Notre Dame of Maryland and is a member of the Harvard School of Divinity Summer Leadership Institute’s Class of 2005. 

Maryann Dillon

Executive Director,
Housing Initiative Partnership (HIP)

 

Maryann Dillon is Housing Initiative Partnership’s Executive Director. She has more than 30 years of experience managing affordable housing development, and is responsible for the overall programs and direction of HIP. Maryann joined HIP in October 2012.

Prior to leading HIP, Maryann held positions as Director of Real Estate Development at the Housing Opportunities Commission of Montgomery County, and as Senior Vice President at Banc of America Community Development Corporation. She has managed more than $500 million in development activity during her career and has extensive experience using multifamily financing tools including Low Income Housing Tax Credits, tax-exempt bonds, and federal funds such as HOME and CDBG.

Maryann is a Past President of the Housing Association of Nonprofit Developers (HAND), and Board Co-Chair of the Legislative Committee of the Maryland Affordable Housing Coalition. She recently served as a member of the Prince George’s County Council’s Housing Opportunities for All Workgroup, and currently represents HIP on the Purple Line Corridor Coalition’s Steering Committee.

Maryann earned her M.B.A. degree from Yale School of Management, and her Masters of Public Administration through National Urban Fellows and Baruch College
