Greater Washington Community Foundation Welcomes Seán Morris as New Board Chair

The Greater Washington Community Foundation is proud to announce the appointment of Seán Morris, Principal with Deloitte Consulting LLP, as the new Chair of its Board of Trustees.

As Chair, Morris will collaborate with President and CEO Tonia Wellons to lead the region’s largest public foundation with over $500 million in assets and $80 million in annual grants. As a regional foundation with a 50-year history of mobilizing philanthropic resources, The Community Foundation has invested more than $1.7 billion to build equitable, just, and thriving communities in the Greater Washington region.

In 2021, Seán co-chaired The Community Foundation’s strategic planning committee with Artis Hampshire-Cowan which explored ways to address the root causes of persistent inequities exacerbated by the pandemic and economic crisis. Recognizing that our region’s biggest challenges stem from economic injustice, The Community Foundation’s staff and Trustees developed a bold 10-year strategic vision to increase economic mobility and help close our region’s racial wealth gap. The plan outlined how The Community Foundation will provide strong leadership and mobilize resources to grow opportunity and secure prosperity for all who call this region home.

Seán currently serves as Deloitte’s US Transformation Enablement leader, responsible for the integration of multiple firm-wide service delivery, technology, operating model, and talent model transformations, helping enable greater success with Deloitte’s clients and 170,000 US professionals.

Seán is a Deloitte Consulting LLP Principal with a twenty-five-year career driving industry leading client excellence, talent experience, new market development, and operational efficiency. The Greater Washington area has been home to Seán and his family for more than 30 years. Over this period, Seán has served on a number of not-for-profit Boards to help drive meaningful social and community impact. To this end, he is the recipient of Consulting Magazine’s® Excellence in Social & Community Investment Award.

A Tribute to Our Outgoing Board Chair, Richard Bynum

Seán succeeds Richard K. Bynum, Chief Corporate Responsibility Officer for The PNC Financial Services Group, who has served as Board Chair since September 2022. Bynum is an accomplished executive with nearly 20 years of executive leadership experience. As chief corporate responsibility officer for The PNC Financial Services Group and a member of its Executive Committee, Bynum leads the PNC Foundation, Community Affairs, ESG practice, Community Development Banking, and Diversity and Inclusion.

During Richard’s tenure as Chair, he played a crucial leadership role as The Community Foundation embarked on an ambitious plan to create a more prosperous future for our region. This included supporting key aspects of the organization’s strategic growth leading into and beyond it’s 50th Anniversary including the launch of the $75 million, multiyear Together, We Prosper Campaign for Economic Justice. The capital campaign will support The Community Foundation’s work to increase economic mobility to close the region’s racial wealth gap and build sustainable funding to address community needs now and into the future.

We thank Richard for his tireless leadership and are excited to continue to work with him, as a member of our Board of Trustees.

In addition to Seán, The Community Foundation announced Cliff White, Partner of SWaN Investors, as Vice Chair of the Board of Directors and David E. Shiffrin, as Secretary of the Board. Jill Landefeld was also announced as the new Chair of the Board of Trustee’s Investment Committee.

The Community Foundation would like to thank Lesley-Jane Dixon, who finished her service as a member of the Board of Trustees in September 2024. Lesley-Jane has served as a member of the Board of Trustees since 2019, serving as both Treasurer and Chair of the Board of Trustee’s Investment Committee.

 
 

The Community Foundation also welcomed Thomas Penny, President of Donohoe Hospitality, as the newest member of the Board of Trustees. Thomas Penny is the President of Donohoe Hospitality, one of the largest and most experienced hotel management companies in the Washington, DC region, overseeing more than $600 million in hotel asset value. In this role, he drives growth, innovation, and cultivates a supportive, inclusive company culture that promotes upward mobility and celebrates team members for achieving best-in-class results.

Penny is deeply committed to expanding the business while creating pathways for team members to advance into senior levels within the company. As a leading voice for diversity in hotel ownership and executive leadership, he champions the need for the boardroom to reflect the diversity of the break room.

By promoting internal team members and attracting new talent, Penny has built a dynamic team driven by entrepreneurship, collaboration, adaptability, empathy, creativity, and innovation, all aimed at achieving operational excellence and delivering superior results for our partners and stakeholders.

He also serves on numerous industry, education, and nonprofit boards, including the American Hotel & Lodging Association (AH&LA), Hotel Association of Washington, DC (HAWDC), Livingstone College, Marriott-Sorenson Center for Hospitality Leadership at Howard University, and the National Academy Foundation (NAF), among others.

Finally, The Community Foundation welcomed Artis Hampshire-Cowan as a member of The Community Foundation’s Board Emerita. Artis has served on The Community Foundation’s Board of Trustees since 2015 and has been a tireless advocate for investing in the region — especially, within Prince George’s County.

Artis joins other esteemed members of our Emeritus Board, including Terry Beaty, Partner & Senior Advisor at Brown Advisory, Sterling Speirn, and Dan Mayers.

Lesley-Jane Dixon: Cultivating the Future of Female Leadership

The Community Foundation is excited to continue our Leaders of the Future series, highlighting the work and experiences of incredible individuals and organizations from across our community of philanthropic, community, professional advisor, corporate, and nonprofit partners.

Not the least of these are the incredible members of The Community Foundation’s Board of Trustees, who work tirelessly to champion and facilitate the work that we do. Lesley-Jane Dixon has served on The Community Foundation’s Board of Trustees since 2019 and will be completing her service on the Board at the end of this month.

From the early days of her career, Lesley-Jane Dixon was used to being one of the only women in the room.

A finance major who grew up in New Jersey, Lesley-Jane began her career at the epicenter of the global financial industry – the American Stock Exchange on Wall St.

“From the moment I saw the trading floor, I was completely and utterly hooked,” Lesley-Jane recalls, as she witnessed the hustle and bustle of traders,  floor brokers, and  market makers – mostly White men – conducting the trades that fuel the U.S. Economy.

Breaking the Glass Ceiling

Although the numbers have been steadily increasing over the years, Women on Wall St – and in most of the financial sector – are still in the minority. Studies show that just about a third of Certified Financial Planners (CFP) in the US are women – and even fewer (about 18%) are in financial leadership positions.

However, Lesley-Jane did not let that bother her as she spent three years at the Stock Exchange, another year at the investment giant Lehman Brothers, and a distinguished career at Lord, Abbett & Co – one of the oldest money management firms in the US – where she eventually became a portfolio manager and partner.

From Wall St to Main Street

In 2007, Lesley-Jane left her position at Lord, Abbett & Co in New Jersey and began a new career as Chief Investment Officer at Clark Enterprises – A private investment firm founded in 1972 to manage Clark family wealth.

While her new environment differed greatly from the Stock Market Floor, Lesley-Jane enjoyed working with the Clark family to guide their investment strategy and learn more about the Greater Washington region she now called home.

Before long, Lesley-Jane was introduced to The Community Foundation, joining the Montgomery County Advisory Board in 2016 and serving on the Sharing Montgomery grants committee.

“I have truly benefited from the unique perspective the Community Foundation has given me through ongoing education opportunities on the needs and priorities of the region, which mirror those of the nation,” Lesley-Jane shared. “I am forever grateful to the Community Foundation for opening my heart and eyes; my time on the board has been a profoundly transformational experience.”

In the Room Where it Happens

It didn’t take long for Lesley-Jane to catch the attention of fellow financial planner and advisory board member, Mary Pat Alcus who also served on the Board of Trustees as Chair of The Community Foundation’s Investment Committee. The Investment Committee is responsible for overseeing the management of the more than $500 million in assets under The Community Foundation’s purview. By 2019, Lesley-Jane was invited to join the Board of Trustees and the Investment Committee – which she would later Chair.

Within months, Lesley-Jane and Mary Pat helped onboard a new CEO – Tonia Wellons – the second Black Female CEO in the The Community Foundation’s history. Together, with Juliana Mitrojorgji – the organization’s Chief Financial Officer, The CommunityFoundation boasted an all-Female Investment Committee with a combined 75 years of investment, partnership, and financial management experience.

“What I love about working with a strong female leader like Tonia is that she spends more time listening than speaking. ” Lesley-Jane shared. “As an effective communicator, Tonia encourages diverse perspectives, is open to differing opinions and believes in collaboration.  Her commitment to the vision and goals she has set for herself, the organization, and the staff contributes to a culture of respect and success.

Together, the women set out to reevaluate the organization’s investment strategy – eventually seeking out and onboarding a new Outsourced Chief Investment Officer (OCIO) to manage The Community Foundation’s assets and generate stronger returns for fundholders and the community. They also initiated annual onsite visits between The Community Foundation and the OCIO (SEI), to promote strategic alignment and greater transparency around investment priorities.

Lesley-Jane and the Investment Committee were also heavily involved in the adoption and implementation of The Community Foundation’s 10-Year Strategic Vision to close the racial wealth gap – particularly as it related to making socially and financially responsible investments to execute the organization’s goals.

“I thoroughly enjoy working with Tonia, Juliana, Rachel and The Community Foundation team,” Lesley-Jane shared. “They are passionate about what they do, bringing unique strengths, robust skills, and an unmatched dedication to advancing the organization’s mission and vision. Throughout my tenure, I’ve felt valued, appreciated, and part of the team, a rarity in the for-profit and nonprofit worlds.  Tonia has built an enduring culture of inclusion and innovation, enabling her to attract and retain the best and the brightest.  Spending time with them felt like my second home.

Supporting Strong Female Leaders Abroad

Zulnette Garcia Ramos, Executive Director of Albanisteria en la Brega - a nonprofit organization in Puerto Rico that Lesley-Jane advises through How Women Lead.

Lesley-Jane’s leadership impact goes beyond The Community Foundation. In 2023, she was invited to join the Board of Advisors for How Women Lead, a national nonprofit dedicated to helping women influence change in the workplace. (Jill Landefeld, fellow Community Foundation Trustee and member of the Investment Committee, is also a Board Member).

How Women Lead provides outlets for female executives to support women by activating individual and collective power to influence change through leadership advancement, investment, coaching and philanthropy.

Through one of the programs, Lesley-Jane has worked with nonprofit leaders in Puerto Rico and Kenya – helping to support women as they build organizations providing much needed services from access to school libraries to support for victims of domestic violence.

When asked what she enjoys most about the program, Lesley-Jane shared that she enjoys seeing women empowered to change their community and become examples of leadership that future female leaders can follow.

“When we uplift one another, we create networks of encouragement and collaboration that can break down systemic barriers that limit potential,” Lesley-Jane concluded. “Moreover, women supporting each other sets a powerful example for future generations, inspiring them to carry forward the legacy of unity.”

Jill Landefeld, Principal & Portfolio Manager, Brown Advisory

Jill Landefeld specializes in investment management, asset allocation and portfolio construction for a client base that includes foundations, endowments, cultural institutions, trusts, families and private individuals. She has more than 15 years of financial industry expertise, with work experience in four cities and two continents.

Prior to Brown Advisory, Jill was a Vice President at Stifel providing broad investment management services to a selection of institutional and private clients. She joined Stifel in 2015 following its acquisition of Barclays Wealth and Investment Management in the Americas. Prior to her roles in wealth management, Jill provided balance sheet advisory and public sector bond origination services for national treasuries and government agencies with Barclays Investment Bank in London. She also assisted supranational organizations with structuring debut bond transactions in local currencies in frontier markets.

Jill earned a bilingual (English/ Spanish) Masters of Business Administration from IESE Business school in Barcelona, Spain in 2012. She also earned a Bachelor of Arts with Distinction in Foreign Affairs from the University of Virginia in 2004.

Jill has lived in Washington DC for many years. She is a current Ambassador and former Board Member for an international charity that works to increase the quality and availability of education for girls in developing countries. She also serves on the Board of Trustees for the DC History Center, which is an educational non-profit that seeks to deepen awareness of our city’s past to connect, empower and inspire.

Montgomery County Advisory Board

Angela Graham, Quality Biological, Inc.

Angela Graham assumed strategic leadership of the Quality Biological, Inc. in 2012, following 15 years of experience in various commercial leadership roles at Bristol-Myers Squibb, Pfizer, and UCB Pharma. Returning to her family business, she spearheaded the company’s transformation from a prominent supplier to government and academia into one that also supports the diverse R&D needs of the highly regulated bio-pharmaceutical sector.

As the founder’s daughter, Angela is deeply committed to upholding the core values that have shaped the company into the niche manufacturer it is today in the life sciences. Her expertise lies in business development, leadership, and change management.  Angela is a graduate of the University of Virginia.

Quality Biological, situated within the BioHealth Capital Region in Montgomery County, Maryland, has earned acclaim not only for producing top-quality products but also for fostering a strong commitment to community engagement. Guided by unwavering principles of ethics and integrity, Angela and her team prioritize giving back to the community. They actively support local charities and nurture close industry partnerships.

Angela currently serves on the board of PIC-MC at Montgomery College as well as Montgomery and Prince George’s Hospice. Previous board experience includes the Montgomery County Economic Development Corporation and industry group Diversity Alliance for Science.

Carolyn Leonard

Carolyn Leonard, Ph.D, has worked in the field of early childhood mental health and education for over 40 years. She is retired from Montgomery County Public Schools where she worked primarily with the Head Start Program and state funded PreK for under-resourced children and families. As a school psychologist she designed, implemented and evaluated interventions to address factors interfering with students’ learning and school success.  While working as a community psychologist, she was involved with community needs assessment and program planning.  She also had responsibility for assessing the impact of interventions which targeted young children’s development and learning, parenting, and family stability.

In Carolyn’s work with a variety of nonprofit organizations, she has focused on improving the mental health, education and well -being of under-resourced children and families. Addressing needs and access to resources have been goals guiding her work at the individual, program and policy levels.

During her career, Carolyn has served on numerous boards and advisory councils. These have included The Montgomery County Commission for Children and Youth, Early Head Start, Starting Early Starting Smart, Community Kids, the Early Childhood Mental Health Consortium, the National Advisory Council for the School of Education at Johns Hopkins University, Apple Tree Institute for Education and Innovation and The Strathmore Music Center.  While on the board of Strathmore, she chaired the Education Committee, which focused on expanding programs for low-income children and families. Her philanthropy has focused on “giving where you are living” and supporting organizations committed to serving those typically not able to access educational and cultural opportunities.

Carolyn has a Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology from Rutgers University, an MS in Human Development and Family Studies from Penn State University, and a BS in Child Development and Family Relations from the University of Connecticut. She is also a Nationally Certified School Psychologist.

Dusty Rood, Rodgers Consulting

Dusty Rood is the President and CEO of Rodgers Consulting, Inc., headquartered in Montgomery County, MD. Founded in 1957, Rodgers Consulting’s mission is to provide industry-leading land use and real estate development consulting services for clients who demonstrate integrity and who recognize the importance of community responsibility, with a commitment to excellence in planning and design.

 In addition to serving as the CEO of Rodgers Consulting, Dusty is engaged in other community affairs. He currently serves on the Leadership Group of Montgomery Moving Forward and the Advisory Board of the Universities at Shady Grove. He is a member and past participant of Leadership Maryland, and he previously served as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce.

Joan Schaffer

Joan Schaffer  is a proud third-generation native of the DC area, and she has called Montgomery County home for most of her life. After earning her MBA at Georgetown, she held progressively significant roles at Price Waterhouse and Freddie Mac, ultimately serving as Managing Vice President and Business Information Officer at Capital One.

Following an early retirement, Joan turned her focus to providing enhanced opportunities for Montgomery County’s underserved residents. Her efforts included consulting for various local nonprofits, board service, and active participation in the County Council’s Grants Advisory Group. Evolving from this involvement, she accepted the role of Council Grants Manager overseeing the entire grants process and collaborating with the Advisory Group to evaluate up to 400 grant applications each year and recommend appropriate Council funding.

Joan's commitment to our nonprofit sector continues as she provides pro bono consulting and serves on multiple boards within the community. Presently, she lends her expertise to organizations such as the Food Council, MCAEL, the Children’s Opportunity Alliance, and the Imagination Library, underscoring her dedication to serving the diverse needs of Montgomery County's residents. She is especially passionate about providing equitable support and opportunities for all of our county’s children.

Prince George’s County Advisory Board

Keisha Hawkins, MBA, PMP

Keisha Hawkins is a dynamic leader in operations and project management, with a proven track record of over a decade. As the Director of Operations at Wayne Enterprises, she not only leads operational policy implementation and growth directives but also spearheads client support services, showcasing her ability to manage diverse responsibilities and teams.

In addition to her role at Wayne Enterprises, Keisha is the owner-operator of Rita's Water Ice of Oxon Hill. She has previously served as a Program Manager at Cambio Consulting, where she effectively planned, organized, and managed various projects for the USDA’s Office of the Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights, enhancing quality control and communications support.

Her extensive background includes significant achievements such as overhauling administrative and operations management at Federal Advisory Partners, leading to increased oversight and efficiency. At Highlight Technologies LLC, she excelled as a Program Analyst III, implementing quality control measures and improving program deliverables' timeliness.

With a strong focus on strategic planning, risk mitigation, and data management, Keisha has consistently demonstrated her ability to handle complex operational overhauls and refine administrative systems. Her expertise spans operational efficiency improvement, resource allocation, and event coordination, making her a valuable asset to any organization.

Keisha holds an MBA from the University of Massachusetts and multiple certifications, including a PMP from the Project Management Institute and a Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Certificate from Cornell University. She is married and has three children who excel academically and are talented in sports.

Keisha's commitment to community development is a cornerstone of her professional values. Her robust problem-solving capabilities and dedication to enhancing organizational performance align perfectly with the mission of the Greater Washington Community Foundation Prince George’s Board. She eagerly looks forward to contributing to nonprofit initiatives and positively impacting the community.

Aimee Griffin, Esq, Principal Attorney, Life & Legacy Counselors of The Griffin Firm PLLC

Aimee is the principal attorney of Life & Legacy Counselors of The Griffin Firm PLLC, an estate and business succession firm committed to the creation, protection and transfer of wealth serving District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and Florida.

Aimee is the Board President and Founder of the Association of Black Estate Planning Professionals, Inc., a collaborative economic empowerment organization with a mission to bridge the racial wealth gap. With a commitment to strategic community economic development for Black people, Aimee serves as Corporate Counsel for the US Black Chambers, National African American Insurance Association, (NAAIA) and the BOW Collective.

Aimee is committed to supporting community growth through education and speaks regularly at national, regional, and local forums to educate other attorneys and the community. Aimee is an adjunct professor at the Western New England University, School of Law, and a monthly contributor to the Washington Informer newspaper. She strongly believes “when we know better, we can do better.”

Aimee has been recognized and received awards by local and regional associations including the Small Business Administration as a Minority Business Champion. Aimee was just awarded the 2024 Women in Business Champion of the Year Award by the DC Chamber of Commerce.

Mandi Koba, Program Officer, Economic Mobility

Mandi Koba joined the Greater Washington Community Foundation in February 2024 as the Program Officer, Economic Mobility. In her role, Mandi provides management and guidance to programs such as Thrive Prince George’s and Brilliant Futures.

Mandi joins us from Fairfax County, VA where she helped launch their guaranteed income pilot program. Prior to that, she worked at Bread for the City supporting two cash transfer programs: THRIVE East of the River and DC Cares. She also previously worked as a case manager and advocate serving youth and adults across a range of vulnerable circumstances.

Mandi holds a bachelor’s degree in Women’s Studies and a Master of Social Work from George Mason University. As lived experience professional, her work is centered in equity, community voice and individual self-determination.

Bridget Hanagan, Senior Manager, Development Operations

Bridget joined The Community Foundation (for the second time) as Senior Manager, Development Operations in May 2024. Bridget’s career in philanthropy started in 2012 when she joined The Community Foundation for the first time as Donor Services Officer supporting the local Mongomery County office in donor support and development, communications, and event planning. For the past 12 years, she has worked closely with families and individuals to develop and execute their charitable giving goals, managed impactful philanthropic partnerships, and built development systems to drive organizational success.

Prior to returning to The Community Foundation, Bridget managed Philanthropic Partnerships for PSI, a global health NGO that makes it easier for all people to lead healthier lives and plan the families they desire. At PSI, Bridget supported Maverick Collective members to engage deeply in the work of PSI through an experiential philanthropy approach that gave members hands-on learning experiences with the projects they funded. She also managed PSI’s relationships and communications with wealth and philanthropic advisors.

Bridget holds a BA from Simmons University in International Relations and Economics with a French minor. A New Englander at heart, she resides in Washington, DC with her fiancé and their rescue dog, Rue. Outside of work, you can find Bridget hiking with Rue, planning her next ski trip, checking off a bucket list travel destination, trying out new recipes, or searching for the best dumpling in the DMV.

Emani Brooks, Summer Intern, Development Team

Emani Brooks is currently a Junior attending Bowie State University majoring in Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing. Upon graduating with her Bachelor's degree, Emani plans to attend Graduate School and get her Master's degree in either Communications or Public Relations and pursue a career in Social Media Management/Marketing. Emani is a previous employee at Bank of America as a Financial Center Intern and also has experience in Social Media Marketing and Journalism. In her pastime, Emani enjoys reading, writing, and spending time with her family and friends.

The Community Foundation Board of Trustees

S. Decker Anstrom, Vice Chair Arena Stage

Decker Anstrom serves on the Board of Directors of Discovery, Inc., as well as on the boards of national nonprofit groups (Island Press; Climate Central; and Planet Forward).

Anstrom, who lives in Washington, D.C., served as U.S. Ambassador and Head of the U.S. Delegation to the 2011 and 2015 World Radiocommunication Conferences (WRC 12 and 15), held under the auspices of the International Telecommunications Union. WRC’s, which convene every three to four years, are treaty level conferences involving more than 150 countries that consider international and regional spectrum allocation and regulatory issues that support satellite, mobile, aviation, and other wireless services.

He retired as President of Landmark Communications and Chairman of The Weather Channel Companies in late 2008, following Landmark’s sale of The Weather Channel to NBC. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Comcast Corporation from 2001-2011.

Prior to his positions at Landmark (headquartered in Norfolk, VA), Anstrom had a long career in public service and in the communications industry. During the Carter Administration, he was a senior staff member in the White House Office of Management and Budget, working on the creation of the U.S. Department of Education, and then served in the White House Office of Presidential Personnel. He subsequently joined and later became President of Public Strategies, a Washington-based public policy consulting firm.

In 1987 he joined the National Cable Television Association (NCTA) as Executive Vice President; he became President and CEO in 1994. During his tenure he led the cable industry’s efforts that helped result in the Telecommunications Act of 1996. In 1999, Anstrom joined The Weather Channel Companies (TWCC — which included The Weather Channel cable network, weather.com, and WSI, the leading business-to-business weather provider) in Atlanta, GA as President and CEO. In 2002, he became President of Landmark Communications, a privately held, diversified media company that owned newspapers, local television stations, database centers and print and classified advertising businesses, as well as The Weather Channel Companies. In that position he also served as Chairman of TWCC.

In addition, Anstrom has served on numerous cable industry boards (including NCTA, which he chaired for two years), two nonprofit boards in the Hampton Roads area (the Chrysler Museum and public television and radio broadcaster WHRO), and on the Boards of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, the Institute for Educational Leadership, and the National Environmental Education Foundation.

Anstrom received a BA degree from Macalester College (St. Paul, MN) and attended the Woodrow Wilson Graduate School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University for one year.

Matthew Edwards, Partner, Ain & Bank Law

Matthew W. Edwards focuses on high-stakes matrimonial cases involving complex financial arrangements, family-owned or closely held businesses, and complex custody matters. Matt also helps clients negotiate and enforce prenuptial agreements. In addition to legal analysis, Matt routinely works with forensic accountants, valuation experts, certified financial planners, and professional therapists to provide a clear path to a quick and favorable resolution of his clients’ divorce and custody matters. Matt also advises as general and civil litigation counsel to high-net-worth clients and their businesses. When necessary, Matt is a tenacious courtroom advocate at the trial court and appellate levels.

Matt volunteers as a family law mentor for the D.C. Bar Advice & Referral Clinic, where he advises pro se litigants on family law and domestic violence matters. Over the course of his career, Matt has devoted thousands of hours to pro bono work, including on behalf of the Greater Washington Community Foundation.

Matt was recognized by Best Lawyers in 2020. He currently serves as Chair of the Litigation Community of the D.C. Bar, and as a member of the D.C. Bar Rules of Professional Conduct Review Committee. He is also a member of the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association.

Prior to joining Ain & Bank, Matt was a commercial litigator in the Washington, D.C. offices of Willkie, Farr & Gallagher LLP. While there, he focused on complex commercial and securities litigation on behalf of clients such as the General Electric Company, Facebook, Inc., and Big 4 accounting firms.

The Community Foundation Staff

Darius Graham, Managing Director of Community Investment

Darius Graham joined the foundation in October 2023 as the Managing Director of Community Investment. In this role, he oversees the foundation’s grantmaking programs, strategic initiatives, and collaboratives. He leads the Community Investment team and serves on the foundation’s executive leadership team.

Previously as the Program Director for Baltimore at The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation, Darius guided the distribution of over $30 million in grants annually to nonprofits working across the areas of housing, health, workforce development, and education in Baltimore and beyond. In this role, he also developed and led strategic initiatives such as the Greenmount Life, Opportunity, and Wellness (GLOW) Initiative — an award-winning, multi-year, place-based strategy that unites residents and a network of over 30 nonprofits to ensure all residents of four central Baltimore neighborhoods can access and utilize comprehensive healthcare services, nutritious food, and enriching opportunities for youth. Other initiatives included the $25 million economic mobility initiative (Mobility LABs) in partnership with the Robin Hood Foundation and a $3.7 million initiative in Stockton, California to improve academic and civic outcomes.

Prior to that, Darius was the founding executive director of two university-wide innovation and entrepreneurship programs at Johns Hopkins University (Social Innovation Lab and FastForwardU) where he helped students, faculty, and local residents transform novel ideas and new technologies into viable ventures. Darius was the founder and executive director of DC Social Innovation Project, which supported the launch and growth of innovative community-based ventures tackling pressing social issues in Washington, DC. He began his career as an attorney in the Financial Restructuring practice group at Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP.

Darius is a Civil Society Fellow with The Aspen Institute and ADL and a member of the Aspen Global Leadership Network. As an adjunct professor at the University of Denver and Goucher College, Darius has taught graduate courses on social entrepreneurship, public sector innovation, and nonprofit leadership. At the Baltimore Museum of Art, he serves as vice-chair of the board of trustees and chair of the governance committee. He previously served as co-chair of the board of directors of Community Law In Action, a mayor-appointed commissioner at Serve DC, and a Social Entrepreneur-In-Residence at University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business.

Darius' work and insights are highlighted in two books, Becoming a Changemaker: An Actionable, Inclusive Guide to Leading Positive Change at Any Level and In the Business of Change: How Social Entrepreneurs Are Disrupting Business as Usual. He has been a speaker at SXSW, SOCAP, Mission Investors Exchange, and Startup Champions; published in The Baltimore Sun, Inside Philanthropy, and more; and received honors from Ebony magazine, Baltimore Business Journal, and was recently named a GameChanger by Baltimore magazine. Darius is the author of Being the Difference: True Stories of Ordinary People Doing Extraordinary Things to Change the World. He received a B.A. summa cum laude from Florida A&M University and a J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley – School of Law.

Chis Howie, Managing Director of Development

Chris joined The Community Foundation as Managing Director of Development in October 2023. With more than 20 years in the nonprofit and philanthropic space, Chris has worked in higher education, media, public policy, and environmental campaigns. His earlier career in Washington, D.C. includes senior roles at NPR, The Pew Charitable Trusts, and the Brookings Institution, where he built partnerships with local and national leaders in collaboration with philanthropies to advance change at the city scale.

Chris holds a bachelor’s degree in finance from Rowan University and began his career in investment banking at JPMorgan Chase & Co. and worked at BlackRock funds. A Philadelphia transplant, Chris now resides in Northwest Washington, D.C. with his wife Gupi and their two sons, Nigel and Graham. When they are not volunteering with local organizations, you will find Chris and his family on their goat farm in St Mary’s County, Maryland.

Remembering Alexine Clement Jackson’s Spirit of Commitment and Excellence

The Greater Washington Community Foundation is deeply saddened by the passing of Alexine Clement Jackson, an extraordinary leader, philanthropist, and mentor.

She was a beloved member of the Greater Washington Community Foundation family –a long-time donor and fundholder who became a Trustee in 1999, served as our Board Chair from 2002-2006, and eventually received the coveted Civic  Spirit Award (later renamed the Spirit of Philanthropy Award) in 2006 for her many contributions to the health and vitality of our region. A deeply committed board member, she also chaired the Community Investment Committee and supported many of our major initiatives including serving on the Steering Committee of the Greater Washington Creative Communities Initiative that leveraged investments for artists and art-making in the region.

“Alexine Clement Jackson was a friend, mentor and a great leader. She was the epitome of class and style. When she walked into a room, heads turned and acknowledged her entrance, not just because of her beauty, but because of the spirit of commitment and excellence that she carried into every room. She was the first and only African American chair of The Community Foundation and it was under her leadership that we decided to host an annual fundraising event. She served as an ambassador for breast cancer awareness having survived the disease twice. I'm saddened to hear of her passing but it is clear God needed her more than we did. My heartfelt condolences to her children and grandchildren. Mrs. Alexine Clement Jackson will be greatly missed,” said Terri Lee Freeman, former President and CEO of The Community Foundation (1996-2014), 2023 Spirit of Philanthropy Award Recipient, and current Executive Director of the Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History and Culture. 

Alexine Clement Jackson devoted her life to community and civic organizations and received numerous awards both locally and nationally for her work, including Washingtonian of the Year. She was Board Chair of the Susan G. Komen Foundation, former National President of the Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA), president of Black Women's Agenda, and Chair of the National Museum of Women in the Arts. She was also Board Chair of The Washington Performing Arts Society and was on the board of many arts organizations including the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Strathmore Hall, and Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts.

“I was blessed to work with Alexine. She was a renowned and respected leader in the nonprofit and philanthropic sectors. She was also a beloved arts leader. I had the honor to work with her closely when she was Chair of our Community Investment Committee and when she served on the Steering Committee for the Creative Communities Initiative. I still remember everything she taught me about leadership when we worked together over 15 years ago to try and strengthen the support system for artists in our region. She taught me the importance of communicating ‘what success looks like’ by painting a clear picture, and helping others see the vision clearly. I will never forget how warm, loving, committed, and kind she was—and how elegant, strong, graceful, and focused. I can still feel her presence. My heart goes out to her friends and family,” said Silvana Straw, Senior Community Investment Officer and Philanthropic Advisor at The Community Foundation.

Quanda M. Allen, CAP®
Senior Vice President
Senior Director of Integrated Relationship Management

Quanda M. Allen leads the corporate strategy that drives cross line of business referrals for wealth and insurance at Truist Bank, a top 10 U.S. institution with nearly 60,000 teammates and $548 billion in assets as of September 2022.

Prior to this role, Quanda was the Client and Advisor Experience Leader for the Specialty Wealth team which includes the Foundations and Endowments, Sports and Entertainment, Medical, Legal, Corporate Trust and Escrow and International divisions. As a key business partner, she drove revenue growth and brand awareness through integrated marketing and communications strategy, insightful thought leadership and differentiated client experiences.

Quanda is the founder and creative force behind the content marketing and thought leadership strategy for the Foundations and Endowments Specialty Practice. Under her executive leadership and oversight, the Practice refined its value proposition, rebranded all its marketing material, deployed an innovative online platform and developed more than 100 unique pieces of proprietary thought leadership content – several of which she authored. Her philosophy to wealth management marketing is rooted in delivering content-driven value in an efficient and effective manner while equipping advisors to build trust through deep personal relationships.

Quanda is an active Washington, DC community leader who serves on the board of Sitar Arts Center’s Executive, Investment and Capital Campaign committees. As a former board member, she was a founding co-chair of National Capital Area Boy Scouts of America’s ScoutReach program which is designed to bring scouting to inner city youth. Quanda’s community engagement has been recognized by Outstanding Atlanta (2009) and SunTrust Bank’s Presidential Volunteer Award program (2015-2018). She is a member of the 2020 class of Leadership Greater Washington and a 2024 Executive MBA candidate at the Georgetown University McDonough School of Business.

Michelle L. Bender, CFP®
President and Senior Advisor

Michelle grew up in Pittsburgh, PA and moved to the Washington, DC area shortly after college. She is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERTM and brings over 25 years of solid financial and asset management experience to Potomac Financial Consultants, LLC. During Michelle’s career she has held positions at Arthur Andersen, Private Wealth Advisors, and several other financial and asset management firms, including Potomac Financial Consultants, LLC.

She is a graduate of Seton Hill University with dual degrees in Accounting and Human Resource Management. Michelle achieved the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERTM designation through the College of Financial Planning. She is actively involved in the financial services industry, is a member of the Financial Planning Association, and is actively involved in the Million Dollar Round Table.  She volunteers her time with the MDRT Foundation in various roles each year.  Michelle is a Registered Representative of Kestra Advisory Services. She is currently a member of the Gaithersburg-Germantown Chamber of Commerce and Poolesville Chamber of Commerce, as well as a past president of Women Business Owners of Montgomery County.

In Michelle’s spare time, she spends time with her husband and twin children shuffling them between sporting events, as well as she enjoys time on her peloton or running in road races.

John Devine joined the Board of Trustees in 2017, serving on the Board’s Executive Committee as Treasurer of the Board. Ron Franks

As Director of Operations at Bailey Wealth Advisors, Ron Franks is responsible for achieving maximum operational efficiency throughout the firm contributing to an exceptional client experience. Ron’s responsibilities include the review and assessment of current and future organizational structure, business succession planning, estate planning, portfolio advisory support as well as ensuring operational systems support current and future firm growth.

With over 10 years of experience in the legal and securities industry, Ron brings a depth of knowledge in areas of estate planning, securities, and regulatory compliance.  Ron holds a law degree from the University of Miami and bachelor’s from the University of Kansas.

In addition to his responsibilities, Ron maintains active presence in the local community. Ron has served as the vice chairman of the Mid-County Citizen’s Advisory Board (MCCAB) and as a member of the Wheaton Urban District Advisory Board (WUDAC).  Ron was also a member of County Executive Marc Erich’s Transition Team and is active with the Montgomery County Democratic party.

Mimi Brodsky Kress
Sandy Spring Builders 

Mimi Brodsky Kress got her start in the building industry after graduating from Colby College.  Her dad, builder Albert Brodsky, encouraged her to pursue an apprenticeship program which helped Mimi discover her love for the field, as she quickly rose in the ranks to become assistant superintendent.  After working for several companies, Mimi teamed up with her friend, Phil Leibovitz, to launch her own company, Sandy Spring Builders, which creates custom homes throughout the region.  One of the few women in the industry, Mimi often credits her mother for being her role model and demonstrating what a strong, independent woman can accomplish.  With her signature “take-charge” attitude, Mimi is the heart of the company’s philanthropic leadership, ensuring the team leverages its resources to strengthen the local community which has fostered its success.

A third generation Washingtonian, Mimi and her husband Michael instill the importance of giving back to their two children, Jenna and Max. Mimi is involved with several local charities, including the National Alliance on Mental Illness – Montgomery County (NAMI-MC) and Habitat for Humanity Metro Washington. She was honored as the Montgomery County Philanthropist of the Year in 2022.

Craig Pernick
Chevy Chase Trust

As Senior Managing Director and Head of Fixed Income, Craig Pernick manages the fixed income investment strategies for Chevy Chase Trust and provides wealth management advice. Additionally, Craig oversees the trading of tax exempt and taxable fixed income assets. Craig has special knowledge of municipal and corporate bond trading and analysis with more than three decades in investment management.

Prior to joining Chevy Chase Trust in 2008, Craig managed fixed income portfolios at Asset Management Inc., an independent investment management company where he worked for six years. Craig also worked for sixteen years in institutional fixed income sales and trading with R.W. Corby and Co. and Artemis Capital.

Craig earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan and a Masters in Business Administration from Wayne State University. He serves on the Board of Trustees of the Montgomery County, Maryland Public Schools Retirement System Trust and Other Post-Employment Benefits (OPEB) Trust and is on the Investment Committees of the Greater Washington Community Foundation and The Bethesda-Chevy Chase Rescue Squad. Craig has also been an emergency medical technician volunteer with the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Rescue Squad for 19 years. A 33-year resident of Montgomery County, Craig has been married to his wife Denise for 38 years, and they have two adult children who attended Montgomery County Public Schools.

Gail Wasserman

Gail Wasserman is recently retired from AstraZeneca/MedImmune, where she was Senior Vice President of Biopharmaceutical Development leading the global organization responsible for biologics product development.  Prior to joining AstraZeneca/MedImmune, Gail was engaged in natural products isolation and biopharmaceutical process development at GlaxoSmithKline.  Gail holds a bachelor’s degree in biology and chemistry from Montclair State University and received a MS in biochemistry and a PhD in chemistry from The Pennsylvania State University.

She is the incoming chair of the board of the Pinkney Innovation Complex for Science and Technology at Montgomery College. Gail previously served as a member of the Visiting Committee for Advanced Technology for the National Institute for Standards and Technology, and the Biopharmaceutical Innovation Board of the University of Delaware.  She received the Outstanding Science Alumni Award and the Alumni Fellow Award from The Pennsylvania State University and was named as a PharmaVOICE 100 most inspiring leader in the life-sciences industry.

Michael A. Echols (Mike), is CEO of Max Cybersecurity LLC, located in Washington DC. He previously spent 10 years in critical infrastructure protection and cybersecurity leadership at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Mike led several White House national security and stakeholder engagement risk initiatives. In 2015, Mike was the point-person for the rollout of President Obama’s Executive Order 13691 on Cyber Threat Information Sharing. While at DHS he also Chaired interagency committees related to GPS, convergence, risk management, cyber risk in government contracting, and assessed the cybersecurity of the nation’s small businesses.

Mike was Chairman of the Communications Sector where he led national risk assessment efforts across wireline, wireless, cable, broadcast and satellite. Mike was also the Designated Federal Official for the President’s NSTAC – 30 CEO level members from Defense, IT and Comm Sector companies making recommendations to the President. Mike Chaired the Network Security Information Exchange consisting of cybersecurity experts from Canada, UK, Australia, Canada and the U.S. He also served as the U.S. Representative to the NATO CCPC in Brussels. Mike led classified and unclassified information sharing programs with corporate member’s revenues accounting for 10-15% of U.S. GDP.

Mike is now an international speaker on national resilience and has authored four Forbes online articles on Smart technology. He was featured on a PBS cybersecurity special called “Roadtrip Nation.” Mike is a magazine columnist and 2020 book Author.

His company, Max Cybersecurity, is focused on building a national culture of cybersecurity and national resilience. His clients include the US Army Corps of Engineers, DHS, critical infrastructure entities, and the Walmart.

Mike is a graduate of the National Preparedness Leadership Initiative – Harvard Kennedy School of Public Health and cohort of the Federal Executive Institute. He holds a Master of Business Administration, a Master of Science in Biotechnology, a Graduate Certificate in Technology Management from University of Maryland University College. His Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice is from the University of Maryland. Mike was the UMUC Distinguished Alumni in 2018.

Diana Leon-Brown
President, Artem Ventures, LLC

Diana Leon Brown has delivered exceptional and measurable public-private partnership results for over 25 years. She previously served as the Director of Strategic Partnerships for the Prince George’s County Executive’s Office and currently serves as Principal for Artem Ventures, LLC. 

Diana’s seasoned knowledge and relationships in the Federal, Maryland State and Local governments allow her to navigate economic development by identifying public and private strategic benefits and outcomes. Known as a compelling communicator and storyteller she is highly sought after for keynote speaking engagements and panel discussions.

Dedicated to her mantra. “Do Good, While Doing Well,” Diana cultivates national and global leadership opportunities, exploring ways for businesses, nonprofits and rising leaders to build generational legacy. Over the last 20 years, Diana has been committed to cultivating the next generation of leaders. She has served on numerous boards and chaired several executive, business and governance committees.

Diana’s national track record is juxtaposed by her extensive global cross-sector leadership roles. As Executive Director of the Artem Leadership Institute, she developed high-level international programs and events with the United Nations, Organization of American States, and the Women’s Global Initiative in Africa and Dubai.

Ms. Brown also had the honor of serving as the appointed political liaison on behalf of the Haitian Diaspora Federation for the Obama Administration’s Office of Public Engagement created to develop partnerships in response to the Haitian Earthquake of 2010. Her efforts raised over 40 million dollars in aid and investments.

Michelle Castillo, Staff Accountant

Michelle joined the Greater Washington Community Foundation in May 2023 as the Staff Accountant. In her role, Michelle provides support to accounting, grants, accounts payable and financial reporting, working closely with the Controller and Director of Finance.

Michelle joins us from the Carlyle Group where she worked for five and a half years. She is originally from Suriname, a small country in South America. Her native language is Dutch.


Benton Murphy, Director of Fund Administration & Special Projects

Benton currently serves as Director of Fund Administration and Special Projects at The Greater Washington Community Foundation. In this role, provides overall fund administration and impact measurement functions, enhances the organization’s fundholder engagement work through effective data segmentation, and supports the overall business operations of the organization. Benton has nearly 20 years of experience in the nonprofit and philanthropic sectors, originally coming to the Community Foundation in January 2004. Prior to his current role, Benton served as Senior Program Officer as well as Interim Vice President for Community Investment where he focused on projects addressing racial and social justice, workforce development, and education. Benton holds a master’s degree in Public Administration from The George Washington University and an undergraduate degree from the University of Washington, Seattle.

Eliza Tolbert-Howard, Development Officer, Prince George’s County

Eliza is a California native who joined the Greater Washington Community Foundation in May 2023 as a Development Officer. Her current role on the Prince George's County team includes Development, Donor Services, Marketing, Communications, and Event Planning. Before joining the Community Foundation, Eliza spent four years working in nonprofit spaces. She holds an undergraduate degree in Communications from California State University, Fullerton. Eliza is passionate about access and equality for women, minorities, and low-income individuals. In her free time, she enjoys the arts and personal development.

Yasmin Barakat, Executive Assistant

Yasmine joined The Community Foundation in June 2023. As the Executive Assistant, she provides high-level administrative support to the Executive Office. Yasmine has six years of experience in the administrative and legal field bringing a diverse skillset. Throughout her career, she’s worked on various projects, including high-risk immigration cases to help clients obtain their citizenship. A lover of animals, nature, and spending time with her family, Yasmine is thrilled to be joining The Community Foundation team and to leverage its individual strengths to make a significant impact.

Faces from the Past: Looking Back at The Community Foundation Founders

As we enter the 50th Anniversary of the Greater Washington Community Foundation, we’ve taken a moment to look back at the incredible people behind the founding of our organization, including members of our very first Board of Directors.

We are excited to share their stories with you, as we continue to learn more about their legacy, their leadership, and the impact they have had on the Greater Washington Region!

Founding Board Member Marie Barksdale (far Right) with Civil Rights Activist Dorothy Height (far left).

Marie C. Barksdale moved to DC in 1961 as the Executive Director of Howard University’s Delta Sigma Theta, Inc. A member of the NAACP, the National Council of Negro Women, and Alpha Kappa Alpha's American Council on Human Rights, Barksdale was a powerful advocate of the Civil Rights Movement. In the summer of 1964, she joined Wednesdays in Mississippi (WIMS), a movement dedicated to strengthening interracial solidarity and support for Black women in the South. She continued her advocacy for social and economic justice as a member of the Johnson Administration's Office of Economic Opportunity (OEO) and the Women in Community Service Initiative.

Marie was also deeply involved in community development efforts in the Greater Washington region. In 1973, she was among the first stakeholders engaged in conversations surrounding the forming of a “Community Foundation for Greater Washington”. Later that year, she joined the Board of Directors, where she would serve for at least the next decade.

In 1983, she became the first Executive Director of Young Audiences, Arts for Learning DC- a nonprofit providing arts education services to DC children. She remained heavily involved with the organization until her death in 2003.


Marvin Bordelon (then Msgr Marvin Bordelon) moved to Washington in 1967. A Catholic Priest with nearly two decades of service to congregations in Shreveport, LA, Marvin joined the US Catholic Conference (USCC) as their director of the Division of World Justice and Peace. During his time in Washington, he was appointed as the US delegate to UNESCO.

In December 1972, Marvin resigned from the priesthood to become a consultant with the Council on Foundations in New York, with the purpose of “working on the establishment of a Community Foundation for Greater Washington”.

On May 10, 1973, Marvin gathered with fifteen prominent Washingtonians at the Federal City Club to discuss the founding of a Community Foundation of Greater Washington. Shortly thereafter, the Board of Directors was organized and Marvin became the first President of the Community Foundation of Greater Washington. He would lead The Community Foundation for a number of years before passing the baton to Lawrence S. Stinchcomb sometime around 1978. Marvin passed away at his home in Rockville, MD in 2009.


Peggy Cooper Cafritz came to DC in 1964, at the height of the Civil Rights Movement to attend George Washington University – an institution which was still largely segregated at the time. By her senior year, she had organized a black student union and become a driving force towards the integration of the school’s fraternities and sororities. In 1968, she co-founded what would become the Duke Ellington School of the Arts. In the 1970s, she became the youngest fellow of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars and served on the committee that created the University of the District of Columbia.

In 1981, Peggy married Conrad Cafritz, becoming part of one of the most prominent mixed-race couples in Washington. She became one of the region’s leading supporters of the arts – particularly African-American art and was a founding member of the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities. In 1973, she joined the Board of Directors of the newly organized “Community Foundation for Greater Washington,” where she would serve for at least the next decade. She was instrumental in cultivating the relationship between the fledgling Community Foundation and The Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation, which continues to this day.

In 2000, she was elected President of the DC Board of Education – a position she would hold for the next six years. Peggy Cooper Cafritz passed away in 2018, at the age of 70.


Nancy “Bitsy” Folger came to Washington in 1958 as the daughter of Neil McElroy, Secretary of Defense in the Eisenhower Administration. She got a teaching job in Montgomery County and joined the Junior League. While there, she joined forces with DC leaders like John W. Hechinger in advocating for DC Home Rule. She was one of the first Board Chairs of the Black Student Fund, a nonprofit founded in 1964 to support Black students and the integration of schools. Bitsy quickly gained a reputation as a prodigious fundraiser. She would go on to serve as Chair of the White House Endowment Fund and a member of the White House Historical Association.

In 1973, Bitsy was among the first stakeholders engaged in conversations surrounding the forming of a “Community Foundation for Greater Washington”. Later that year, she joined the Board of Directors, where she would serve for at least a decade. After the terrorist attacks on 9/11, Bitsy rejoined the Board of Directors, serving from 2003-2007. She is currently a fundholder at the Greater Washington Community Foundation.


Maceo W. Hubbard was one of the first Blacks to graduate from Harvard Law School in 1926. Hubbard moved to Washington in 1942 to work as a lawyer on the Committee on Fair Employment Practices, a committee established by President Franklin D. Roosevelt to prevent racial discrimination in the War Industries.

After the war, Maceo joined the Department of Justice, where he was an adviser in the civil rights division. Maceo helped developed policies and legislation related to school desegregation that became part of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Maceo was heavily involved with the National Capital Area United Way (today the United Way of the National Capital Area), serving as one of the first presidents of the organization in 1975 – just a year after the chapter’s founding. He also served as president of the board, chairman of the trustees assembly, and treasurer for the organization.

In 1973, Maceo joined the Board of Directors for the newly formed “Community Foundation of Greater Washington” – a position he would hold for nearly a decade. His involvement on the board would be critical to establishing The Community Foundation’s relationship with the National Capital Area United Way, which continues to this day. Maceo passed away at his home in Chevy Chase in July 1991.


Polly Shackleton moved to DC in 1939 to work on President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s third Presidential Campaign. After settling in Ward 3, she became heavily involved in politics after the war, becoming a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1956. In the 1960s she served alongside future DC Mayor Walter Washington on The Committee for a More Beautiful Capital, set up by First Lady Lady Bird Johnson.

Polly was a strong advocate for DC Home Rule. When President Johnson expanded the appointed form of DC government from a single commissioner to three in 1967, Polly was named to the council. In 1974, she won a seat on the first elected council, a position she would hold until her retirement in 1986.

Polly was among the first stakeholders engaged in conversations surrounding the forming of a “Community Foundation for Greater Washington”. Later that year, she joined the Board of Directors. Polly passed away in July 1997.


Davidson Sommers came to Washington as the General Counsel for the World Bank in 1949. He later transitioned to the International Finance Corp, a World Bank affiliate, where he would stay until 1960, retiring as VP of the organization.

In 1951, Davidson was approached by Eugene Meyer about becoming President of a family foundation he had established six years earlier. He served as President of the Eugene and Agnes E. Meyer Foundation until 1975, helping the organization grow from disbursing $70,000 in grants annually to disbursing $879,000 in 1974.

In 1972, Davidson was one of the first stakeholders engaged in conversations surrounding the forming of a “Community Foundation for Greater Washington”. In 1973, he was appointed to serve as the organization’s first Chairman of the Board of Directors. Davidson passed away in December 2000.


Henry “Hank” Strong was born and raised in Washington, DC. His great-grandmother, Hattie M. Strong, was the wife of the co-founder and president of Eastman Kodak Company. She established the Hattie M. Strong Foundation in 1928, which Hank would later lead as President and CEO.

Hank served in the Navy during WWII. After the war, he joined the Foreign Service, stepping down in 1967 to take over leadership of his family’s foundation. Under Hank’s leadership, the Hattie M. Strong Foundation began a new focus on investing in the Greater Washington region. They invested extensively in neighborhoods impacted by the 1968 Race Riots and transitioned scholarship programs to support more local students.

In 1973, Hank joined the Board of Directors for the newly formed “Community Foundation for Greater Washington” – a position he would hold for more than two decades. He was heavily involved in the Washington Regional Association of Grantmakers (WRAG), and mobilized the Hattie M. Strong Foundation to respond to community needs. Hank passed away in March 2007.


Bishop John T. Walker was the first African-American to attend the Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria, VA. He began his ministry in the Greater Washington region in 1966, at the only integrated Episcopal Church in DC, serving some of the city's most economically challenged neighborhoods.

In 1973, he joined the Board of Directors for the newly formed "Community Foundation for Greater Washington," lending his support to setting up a new avenue for philanthropy in the region.

In 1977, he became the first African-American diocesan bishop for the Diocese of Washington (only the second African-American Bishop in the nation). He also served as the President of the Board of Directors of Africare -- an aid organization focused on community development in Sub-Saharan Africa -- from 1975 until his death in 1989. He was a close friend of Archbishop Desmond Tutu and a vocal opponent of the apartheid regime.

In honor of his legacy, the Episcopal Diocese of Washington organized The Bishop John T. Walker School for Boys in 2006 to address the serious educational challenges facing African American boys in the low-income communities east of the Anacostia River.


Joseph L Whyte moved to Washington in 1946 to join American Security Bank, where he would work until 1978, retiring as the bank’s Vice Chairman. A WWII Navy Veteran, Whyte held a law degree from George Washington University, a graduate degree in Banking from Rutgers, and was a member of the Georgetown University Law Center faculty. He participated extensively in higher education fundraising and in 1965 was tapped to chair American University’s fifth annual sustaining fund drive.

In 1973, Joseph was one of the first stakeholders engaged in conversations surrounding the forming of a “Community Foundation for Greater Washington”. He played a critical role in securing support from local banks for the young foundation. Later that year, Joseph was named as the Secretary and Treasurer of the Board of Directors, where he served for a number of years. Joseph passed away in January 2000.

Greater Washington Community Foundation Welcomes Richard Bynum as New Board Chair

The Community Foundation announces the appointment of Richard K. Bynum, Chief Corporate Responsibility Officer for The PNC Financial Services Group, as the new Chair of its Board of Trustees. Bynum succeeds Katharine Weymouth who has served as Board Chair since September 2020.

 Washington, D.C., September 22 – Today, the Greater Washington Community Foundation announced the appointment of Richard K. Bynum, Chief Corporate Responsibility Officer for The PNC Financial Services Group, as the new Chair of its Board of Trustees.

As Chair, Bynum will partner with President and CEO Tonia Wellons to lead the region’s largest public foundation with over $500 million in assets and $70 million in annual grants. As a regional foundation with a 50-year history of mobilizing philanthropic resources, The Community Foundation has invested more than $1.5 billion to build equitable, just, and thriving communities in the Greater Washington region.

Recognizing that our region’s biggest challenges stem from economic injustice -- the root cause of persistent inequities which have been exacerbated by the pandemic and economic crisis -- The Community Foundation staff and Trustees recently developed a bold new 10-year strategic plan to close our region’s racial wealth gap. The plan outlines how The Community Foundation will provide strong leadership to identify the most promising ways to close the gap and mobilize the resources and support to make it happen. This will include:

  • Leading with an equity lens that guides its operations, investments, and grantmaking.

  • Nearly doubling assets over the next ten years and building a permanent endowment in order to respond to the challenges and opportunities at scale.

  • Directing resources toward strengthening neighborhoods with the greatest needs and the BIPOC-led community organizations that serve them. 

  • Investing in strategies to increase economic mobility and support individual and community wealth building.

“Richard is the right person to lead our Trustees as we embark on an ambitious plan to create a more prosperous future for our region,” said Tonia Wellons, President and CEO, Greater Washington Community Foundation. “He possesses an essential combination of strategic business acumen, investment expertise, and a strong commitment to this region. Bynum is an accomplished executive with nearly 20 years of executive leadership experience. As chief corporate responsibility officer for The PNC Financial Services Group and a member of its Executive Committee, Bynum leads the PNC Foundation, Community Affairs, ESG practice, Community Development Banking, and Diversity and Inclusion. In addition, Bynum is leading the implementation of PNC’s Community Benefits Plan through which the company will provide at least $88 billion in loans, investments, and other financial support to benefit communities of color and low- and moderate-income individuals and communities.

Recognized as one of region’s most influential business leaders by the Washington Business Journal, Bynum serves on the boards of numerous nonprofit and civic organizations, including the corporate council for the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History & Culture; the Economic Club of Washington, DC; the Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts; the Federal City Council; the United Way of the National Capital Area; and the Virginia Early Childhood Foundation.

Bynum succeeds Katharine Weymouth who has served as Board Chair since September 2020. During her tenure as Chair, Weymouth oversaw the hiring of Tonia Wellons as permanent President and CEO in 2020 and she played a key role during the development of The Community Foundation’s new 10-year strategic plan. As a Community Foundation Trustee for the last 6 years, Weymouth continued a family tradition and legacy of giving and service to the Greater Washington region. Her grandmother (and namesake) Katharine Graham, who ran The Washington Post for more than two decades, also served on the board of The Community Foundation for nearly a decade. Weymouth previously served as Publisher and CEO of The Washington Post, and today she serves on the Board of Graham Holdings and advises several startup businesses.

Since its founding in 1973, The Community Foundation has mobilized philanthropic resources to support and strengthen the Greater Washington region and ensure it is a place where all residents can live, work, and thrive. Over the last few years, The Community Foundation has led the region’s largest coordinated philanthropic response to the COVID-19 pandemic – raising over $11 million in community support to help nonprofits meet the increased demand for food, shelter/housing, medical care, mental health services, legal aid, educational support, and more. Last year, the organization began implementing a new strategic plan to center racial equity and inclusion, align business practices with its values, and to close the racial wealth gap. Later this year, the organization will launch several new pilot programs focused on increasing economic mobility in marginalized communities throughout the region.

Meet Our New Staff Members

Dr. Marla Dean, Senior Director, Health Equity Fund

Marla M. Dean is a native Detroiter. For over a decade, she has lived East of the River in Washington, D.C. With nearly 30 years of teaching and leadership experience in the District of Columbia, Maryland, Michigan, and Virginia, Marla is a recognized national leader and expert in the two generational and whole child approaches.

Most recently, Marla has served as the executive director and chief executive officer of Bright Beginnings Inc. (BBI), a non-profit, community-based organization that operates two-generation programming for children and families experiencing homelessness and housing instability in Washington, D.C.

Marla is a proud Ward 7 resident where she lives in the PennBranch community with her husband, Steve. She has one son who graduated from Morehouse College with a degree in Cinema, Television and Emerging Media Sciences.

Yorman De La Rosa, Donor Services Associate, District of Columbia

Yorman joined The Greater Washington Community Foundation in April 2022 as the Donor Services Associate for the DC office of Philanthropy and Donor Services.

Yorman comes to The Community Foundation with more than 5 years of project management experience in the economic and community development sector. He is a passionate advocate of greater education access for low-income, first-generation students. Prior to joining The Community Foundation Yorman spent 4 years working in youth development at a local DC-based nonprofit organization and with the Peace Corps in Morocco.

Olivia Hsu, Donor Services Associate

Olivia Hsu, CFP® joined The Community Foundation in May 2022 as a Donor Services Associate. She is currently working with the Montgomery County team to support donor requests and initiatives.

 Olivia is a Certified Financial Planner™ and previously spent three years working in wealth management at Wealthspire Advisors (previously Bronfman Rothschild) in Potomac, Maryland. In this role, she developed an interest in coordinating philanthropy and planned giving for her clients and also served on the firm’s Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging Committee.

Tiara Isom, Events & Marketing Coordinator

Tiara Joined the Community Foundation in June 2022 as the Events and Marketing Coordinator. In this role, she supports both event planning logistics and promotion. Tiara has over 8 years of experience planning and coordinating events for the DC community. She also spent the last 4 years as a marketing coordinator at a MCO (Managed Care Organization) health plan that services the DC community.

Tiara is extremely passionate about giving back to the community and loves being a difference maker. Tiara found her love for events and marketing after working with the promotions department at CBS Radio for WPGC 95.5 station. Since then, she has volunteered and worked community outreach/marketing jobs. Tiara is a Bowie State University graduate who completed her Certificate of Bachelor Studies with a degree in Communications (Broadcast Journalism).

 

Mary Robinson, Interim Managing Director, Development

Mary Robinson joined The Community Foundation in 2022 as the Interim Managing Director, Development.  Mary has pursued her passion for building thriving communities as the founder of Capacity Partners, a consulting firm in its 20th year serving nonprofits in Greater Washington.  Mary and her team have worked successfully with The Community Foundation on the Children’s Opportunity Fund and Food for Montgomery. 

Mary is deeply committed to helping people get to the heart of challenges and achieve their goals.  An expert in nonprofit fundraising and management, she brings extensive experience in capital campaigns and major donor programs, comprehensive strategic planning, and board development. Prior to founding Capacity Partners, she was president of the electronic screening division of national consulting firm Marts & Lundy, director of prospect screening at Bentz Whaley Flessner, and product manager at Wealth ID, a Thomson Financial company. Previously she was the co-owner of DataPlus Inc., a software company serving nonprofits nationwide.

Isabel Spake, Program Officer, Health Equity Fund

Isabel joined the Greater Washington Community Foundation in June 2022 as a Program Officer. She has over 10 years of project and grants management experience in the DC area.

Isabel’s interest in community-based work started while she served as an AmeriCorps VISTA for DC government, where she later became the AmeriCorps Program Officer. In addition to her experience in local government, she has also worked for local non-profits focused on teacher quality issues and public land efforts.


Meet our New Advisory Board Members - Prince George’s County

Dr. Marcia Robinson, M.S. Robinson Construction

Dr. Marcia Robinson is a visionary leader with over 25 years of successful collaboration with business and community leaders in Prince George’s County. Dr. Robinson is a Certified Natural Health Professional (CNHP), author, ordained minister, and entrepreneur. She is the author of several books including “Inside Out Your Body Is Talking” and “Peaceful Existence, Warfare of the Mind”.

Dr. Robinson serves as President and CEO of M.S. Robinson Construction working to improve housing conditions in Prince George’s County. Prior to that she worked as a statistician for the U.S. Census Bureau for more than 20 years.

Dr. Robinson received her Doctorate of Health Sciences from University of Berkeley. She also received a Masters in Project Management from George Washington University and a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology and Health Education from North Carolina Central University.

Marcia is married to Rev. James J. Robinson, Pastor and Founder of The Tree of Life Christian Ministries in Clinton, Maryland. She is the mother of two children, Nicole and Christopher; and three grandchildren, Akkirah, Khylee, Kouture, and Christopher Jr. She is also a proud member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.

Meet our New Advisory Board Members - Montgomery County

Alisha Griffey, Daintree Capital

Alisha Griffey spent over a decade as COO/CFO of several high-growth companies, helping to position them for successful exits either through private sale or IPO.

During her time as a start-up operator, Alisha saw firsthand the lack of diversity in both the founders and types of companies that receive investment capital. In 2020 she founded Daintree Capital to address these problems head on. Daintree provides working capital loans to female, and other underrepresented, founders. Daintree has more than 40 loans in its portfolio and currently enjoys a 0% default rate.

Daintree is now scaling its lending program and has partnered with innovators at the intersection of for-profit and not-for-profit capital to design an investment instrument that enables the use of philanthropic capital to invest in companies led by under represented founders.

Alisha received a B.A. in Economics from the University of Virginia and an MBA from Stanford University. She lives with her husband in Chevy Chase, MD where she spends her evenings and weekends as a professional youth sports spectator following her two sports addicted teenage sons from field to field.

June Linowitz

June Linowitz has been engaged with art her whole life. While pursuing an active studio practice, she has been, at varying times, an art teacher, a gallery director, an exhibition curator and an art consultant with her own business, ArtSeen. Her artwork, which started out as personal narrative paintings, has evolved into her current mixed media political work focusing primarily on climate change. June Linowitz’ work has been exhibited nationally and internationally. In 2015 she was honored by the Maryland Women’s Heritage Center as one of the 50 women included in “Images and Expressions – Maryland Women in the Arts.”

June Linowitz is an active member of the greater Washington art community. She has served on numerous boards and independent projects supporting the community. Most recently she was board president of Arts on the Block and a member of both The Resilience Fund and The Arts Forward Fund of the Greater Washington Community Foundation. She currently serves on the board of the McLean Project for the Arts where she heads up the Art & Education Committee.

Barbara Mulitz, Sandy Spring Trust

Barbara Mulitz is a Vice President and Senior Trust Officer at Sandy Spring Trust. Her expertise includes: estate and trust planning, special needs planning, aging issues, wealth management, women and retirement, elder financial abuse and financial education.

Serving for six years as a Commissioner on the Montgomery County Commission on Aging, Barbara advocated for legislation to protect older adults, co-produced the internet series "Seniors Today", and chaired the Communications Outreach committee. Her awards and honors include: The MD Bankers’ Assn. Council of Professional Women in Banking and Finance Achievement Award; the Sandy Spring Bank Principle award (twice); the Sandy Spring Bank, Take the Long View Award; and, The Sidwell Friends School, Newmyer Award. 

A native Washingtonian, Barbara is an attorney, with a JD from The American University, a Master in Medical Science from Emory University School of Medicine and a BS from the University of MD. She is an active member of her community and volunteers in various organizations, including: Charles E Smith Life Communities, ELDERSAFE Advisory Council; Montgomery County, MD, Aging in the Community Advisory Committee; Johns Hopkins Medical Center, Women’s Journey, Advisory Board; Sidwell Friends School, Graduated Parents, Alumni Board; Maryland Bar Association, Co-Chair, Law Day Advance Directives Program; and the Montgomery County Voter Hotline.

Sumindi Peiris, Bethesda Magazine

Sumindi Peiris is the President of Bethesda Magazine and Bethesda Beat, published by Z-Pop Media. These award-winning publications’ purpose is to strengthen community and empower individuals through trustworthy journalism that serves, connects, and celebrates the depth and diversity of Montgomery County, one the nation’s most populous and affluent counties.

Peiris spent the past 25 years helping build iconic brands at international organizations spanning media, hospitality and consumer goods sectors. Prior to joining Z-Pop Media, she was the Global Chief Marketing Officer at Time Out Group, a global media publisher that reinvented itself when the COVID-19 pandemic hit and went on to win multiple international awards for its innovative response to supporting community. Her past roles included executive and leadership roles at Hilton Worldwide, Diageo, LVMH, Bacardi and Unilever. Her successful work has been recognized in top media publications across the globe, including Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg.

Born in Sri Lanka, she grew up in Kensington, traveled the world and now lives in North Bethesda with her husband, Sam, their son Daveeth, who also attends Walter Johnson High School, and their 4-yearold Bichon Frise, BooBoo. Since her return, she has been involved in supporting Kids In Need Distributors (KIND), providing meals for kids in need in Montgomery County, and the Buddha Meditation Center of Greater Washington DC, providing free meditation services to build an inclusive, happy and healthy community.

Changing Hearts and Minds: What Inspires Trustee Catherine Pino’s LGBTQ+ Advocacy

In honor of Pride Month, we sat down with Trustee Catherine Pino, co-founder of D&P Creative Strategies and one of our newest board members. Along with her wife Ingrid, Catherine has dedicated her life and her work to advocating for change in LGBTQ+ communities across the nation. As a Latina, she’s especially passionate about building bridges between Latino and LGBTQ+ communities.

Read on for our in-depth conversation with Catherine on her LGBTQ+ advocacy, and why intersectionality and authentic community listening are essential for meaningful change.

Community Foundation: You’re a co-founder of D&P Creative Strategies, a DC-based strategic consulting firm focused on inclusive and equitable advocacy. What initially inspired you to co-found D&P? 

Catherine Pino: I have to say that it was really our love and desire to change the world. [My wife] Ingrid and I wanted to build a bridge between the Latino and LGBTQ+ communities. We knew there was a great deal of homophobia within the Latino community, and we felt compelled to try and change that narrative. We wanted to create an entity that would allow us to work on various of projects and issues. We were really adamant about being out and open about our love and who we were.

CF: In what ways have you seen these values show up in your work at D&P and beyond?

CP: Ingrid and I both have this sense of responsibility to improve conditions for marginalized [populations]. We always have the interests of the communities we represent at the forefront of our work to ensure they aren’t left behind. Our passion for what we do shows up in a variety of ways, including when we advise corporate executives on diversity, equity, and inclusion and corporate giving strategies. It also shows up in our advocacy on Capitol Hill. 

It shows up in our film work, which we describe as a labor of love. We've produced six documentaries for HBO and PBS on identity. People telling their stories helps change hearts and minds.

Another way these values show up is through our political work. In 2008, Ingrid and I created PODER PAC, a political action committee dedicated to supporting Latina candidates as they run for Congress. After Hillary Clinton lost the 2008 Democratic primary, we created the PAC after traveling around the country as surrogates and meeting all these incredible Latinas who shared stories with us about how difficult it was to secure the resources they needed to run for office. 

CF: You’ve done a lot of work in the LGBTQ+ space through an intersectionality lens, especially through your work on the Board of the Arcus Foundation. Can you tell us about some of the LGBTQ+ projects or initiatives you’ve spearheaded that have stuck with you? Why?

CP: One of my favorite projects of all time is Familia es Familia—Family is Family. We created a national education campaign to work on anti-bullying discrimination, family unity, and gay marriage. When we worked on this—before marriage equality—there was a lot of distrust between mainstream LGBTQ+ groups and Latinos. Many felt that Latinos and Blacks were more likely than whites to oppose same-sex marriage. Ingrid and I felt strongly that if we shared stories of LGBTQ+ Latinos, our family members and community members would be more accepting.

We were able to garner the support of over 25 national Hispanic organizations and partners, and created strong allies. We traveled across the country to various Hispanic conferences, held workshops, and talked to Latinos about our community. And we created lots of online resources, including videos of celebrity LGBTQ+ couples talking about anti-bullying and discrimination. 

This campaign was highly instrumental in changing hearts and minds about acceptance of LGBTQ+ family members and, frankly, about marriage within the Latino community. It was beautiful to see how the Latino community grew and came around on many of these issues. 

CF: Based on this work, how would you define “intersectionality?” 

CP: Intersectionality really challenges us to look at how intersecting social identity, particularly minority identities, relates to systems and structures, inequity, and discrimination. It helps us make sense of how race, class, ethnicity, socioeconomic standing, gender, religion, and so much more can overlap and affect how others perceive you. 

Take me, for instance. I’m Latina, a woman, and a lesbian raised by a single mom in a very low income, conservative Catholic family. Intersectionality is the way all of our multiple identities and dimensions intersect and, at least for me, embracing them.  

CF: In what ways might we leverage this approach to create change for our LGBTQ+ neighbors in our region? 

CP: Intersectionality means listening to others, examining our own privilege, and asking questions about who may be excluded or affected by our work. It means taking measurable action by intentionally including other voices and acknowledging the contributions of marginalized individuals. We must recognize that there are multiple forms of systemic discrimination or barriers to opportunity and multiple forms of prejudice that prevent LGBTQ+ people of color from being successful.

As a community foundation, the most important thing we can do is listen and respect the voices of those impacted by issues, be inclusive, and invite people into discussions to incorporate different perspectives. 

CF Why did you decide to join The Community Foundation’s board? 

CP: Most of my foundation experience has been at the national level, so I was genuinely excited to join an organization focused on local issues. I honestly believe that community foundations play a critical role in engaging the community, building community capacity, expanding financial capital, and educating the public about philanthropy. There isn’t always an understanding of the importance of giving, especially in minority communities. Ingrid and I try to do as much as we can to educate our communities about the importance of philanthropy. I believe that if you educate young people about philanthropy and about giving back early on, it will help become part of their world throughout their lives.

CF: Finally, what do you think lies ahead for us in terms of LGBTQ+ rights, and social justice—as a region and a nation?  

CP: I still really believe we need the Equality Act. Many states don't have laws to protect people who are vulnerable to discrimination in key areas of life. I'm also really concerned about the anti-trans legislation popping up and in various states across the country. It’s been a record-breaking year for anti-trans legislation. 

We need to be fierce advocates for trans and LGBTQ+ rights, especially for young youth of color. The Trevor Project recently published their annual survey on LGBTQ+ youth mental health, and 52% of all transgender and nonbinary young people reported seriously contemplating suicide in 2020. We’re just losing too many of our LGBTQ+ young people, and it breaks my heart. It’s really critical to provide mentorship and leadership for future generations.

Leading With Service

Trustee Veronica Jeon considers entrepreneurship—and service—core foundations of her career.

 “I am a product of entrepreneurial parents, [and] I’ve always played a part in giving back. I’ve been blessed and fortunate to do that in my community where I live, work, and play,” she says. 

As President and CEO of VSJ, Inc, a minority, woman-owned public relations and strategic communications firm, she serves clients across the nonprofit, corporate and government sectors. “Your success is our passion” is VSJ’s mission—a charge that also fulfills Veronica’s personal passion for service. 

Veronica also serves as the Chair of the Prince George’s County Advisory Board and as an executive committee member of our Emerging Leader’s Impact Fund in Prince George’s County, helping determine the focus of grantmaking and rallying resources to deepen impact in the County. 

In honor of Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month, she shares what inspires her to continue to serve in philanthropy in our region—especially in this pivotal moment in our nation’s history. 

“As we continue to emerge in Prince George’s County and beyond, I am committed to effectively grow the culture of philanthropy by advocating and leading initiatives; partnering to elevate and engage in philanthropy on all levels locally and regionally; and, mentoring the next generation of entrepreneurs and leaders,” says Veronica. “As a servant leader in this pivotal time in our nation’s history, I am of the belief that we all must lead in such a way to make others better as a result of our presence. And, in doing so, making sure that impact lasts in our absence.”


Empowering Others Towards Action

The Asian American Lead Youth Council, a group of high school and middle school AAPI youth who advocate for diversity and racial equity, is working hard to combat gentrification in DC’s Chinatown. A VoicesDMV Community Action Awards winner, the Council is leading efforts to uplift residents’ stories to raise awareness of the negative impacts of gentrification. Stories are shared on their project-dedicated website, and in their petitions for change to city leaders.

“The main reasons that inspire me to continue to lead and invest in AAPI-focused work are the opportunities to inspire other scholars to fight for what they are passionate about and to spur change in my community,” says Maricarmen, AALEAD Youth Council member. “This work is so important because current social and political issues have created massive tension in communities, where voices are no longer heard. [It] allows the public to learn and spread awareness about the issue at hand.”

Through their work with Chinatown residents, youth leaders have developed meaningful, inter-generational relationships with community members. They’ve facilitated partnership conversations and presentations with groups, and had the opportunity to get to know those directly affected by Chinatown’s rising housing costs. 

“Something that inspires me to continue to lead and invest in this work is definitely my culture and background. Oftentimes Asian Americans in settings such as schools are seen as timid or not assuming of a leader. I aspire and live to prove that wrong. I want to be a role model and norm breaker for people out there and give my fellow Asian Americans inspiration as to what they can achieve even in a society filled with ignorance today.” – Jerry, AALEAD Youth Council member.

A Drive for Justice

The National Korean American Service & Education Consortium (NAKASEC) works to empower Koreans and Asian Americans as change-makers in their communities. Through expanding AAPI voting power; developing a new generation of youth and immigrant leaders; and building a sustainable movement organization, NAKASEC is forging a new future for Korean and Asian Americans.

As one of our Resilience Fund grantees, we were proud to partner with NAKASEC during the height of COVID-19 to help support individuals excluded from federal relief.

“Right now the spotlight is on AAPIs because of increased reporting of interpersonal discrimination, harassment violence towards AAPIs. None of this is new though to us. And while our communities are in focus - even for horrible reasons - this has created opportunities for AAPIs to re-assert belongingness, think about solutions to address the conditions behind the ‘anti-Asian hate,’ and expand the conversation to institutionalized oppression,” says Sookyung Oh, NAKASEC Director.

“People of Asian heritage have always played a central role in leading campaigns and movements for change in solidarity with others. I see this drive for justice among AAPIs who want to fight for change, but didn’t always have a political home or community to be grounded in. That’s what inspires me to lead NAKASEC Virginia. We want to be a place of connection and growth for AAPIs and this work is more important than ever.”

Rachel goslins

With over 25 years’ experience in the cultural sector, creative industries, social impact and law, Rachel Goslins is the Director of the Arts & Industries Building at the Smithsonian Institution. In that capacity she is responsible for all aspects of developing and implementing plans to reopen the building, closed to the public for over a decade, as a space to explore creativity, innovation and the future. Prior to that, she served as Executive Director of the President's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities, an advisory committee to President Obama on cultural policy, from 2009 until late 2015.

“I am so thrilled and honored to join The Community Foundation board—especially in this moment of inflection for the organization. With Tonia and Katherine at the helm, coming out of a robust strategic planning process and the lessons of a tumultuous year, which reinforced our mission and value to the communities we serve, we are poised to do even greater things. Ronald Machen

Ronald Machen is a partner at the law firm of WilmerHale. He serves on the firm’s Global Management Committee and is Co-Chair of the firm’s Investigations and Criminal Litigation Group. He is an experienced litigator, having tried more than 35 cases to verdict, who specializes in complex criminal and civil actions. He also routinely helps clients navigate high-stakes, crisis situations that garner the attention of multiple regulators, Congress and private litigants.

“Having spent a large portion of my career devoted to improving public safety, I am very excited about becoming a board member of The Community Foundation and serving my community in a different capacity. There are so many pressing challenges our society faces today—homelessness, income and racial inequality, job preparedness, lack of educational opportunities for our youth, just to name a few.  I look forward to working with my fellow board members of the foundation to attack these and other issues in order to  improve the quality of life for all residents of the greater Washington region.”

Catherine Pino

Catherine M. Pino is Founder and CEO of D&P Creative Strategies, a certified Latinx, LGBTQ, Veteran and Women’s business enterprise she and her wife, Ingrid Duran, created in 2004. Catherine’s aim is to advance corporate, philanthropic and legislative efforts that mirror her deep passion and commitment to social justice and civil rights issues. Catherine has extensive experience working in the philanthropic and nonprofit sectors, where she developed an expertise for designing and evaluating programs that target underserved populations

“I am so honored to join The Community Foundation familia, and to be part of this incredible organization that does vital work in our community. Archie Smart, Founder, DKR Insights

Archie has counseled political campaigns, global corporations, NGOs, and trade associations to use technology to solve modern communications challenges. A veteran of Madison Avenue, political campaigns, and tech startups, Archie builds offensive and defensive narrative strategies to enhance reputations and influence audiences using data, analytics, and advertising technologies.

Before founding DKR Insights, Smart was an Executive Vice President at MSL / Publicis Groupe, where he was responsible for managing global client engagements.

Denielle Pemberton-Heard

Denielle Pemberton-Heard, Community Foundation board member, is a seasoned executive search, talent development, and legal professional. She’s currently Chief Legal Officer and a shareholding Managing Director with Diversified Search Group, a woman-founded search firm that recruits leadership through a diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) lens.

Denielle feels that now, more than ever, she has the opportunity to showcase overlooked leaders - and to improve opportunity and equity in the workforce.

In honor of Black History Month, we asked Denielle to reflect on what, in this moment, being African American means to her - and how this shapes her work at The Community Foundation, and beyond. 

“The Washington DC metro area is now my adopted home and I am honored to support organizations serving the people who are the heart and soul of this greater community. I never forget the enslaved people who were by law not permitted to learn to read or vote but nevertheless they are responsible for building by hand many of the landmarks we admire. We can’t forget them and that keeps me and my family focused on trying to do our best every day. “

Marcus Braxton

For Marcus Braxton, our new Managing Director of Operations, systems change is second nature. Marcus has over 15 years of experience helping nonprofits and philanthropic organizations enhance internal operations to elevate their success and impact. 

He’s passionate about using his operational skills to create fair and equitable internal systems, a mission he says “ultimately influences how organizations show up in society.” In honor of Black History Month, we asked Marcus to reflect on his work, at The Community Foundation, and beyond.

“I’m motivated by a desire to not only help others, but really to be of service to others, which I believe is more impactful than just seeking to ‘help.’ In doing so, I’ve been fortunate enough to be a part of several high-impact organizations who have really worked to change systems that create inequities. I’m excited to bring that experience here to The Community Foundation to support the organization and community overall.”

Eliana Barnett

Eliana Barnett, Executive Assistant, joined The Community Foundation in December of 2020 to support President and CEO Tonia Wellons. She’s always been passionate about working with mission driven organizations, and hopes to continue serving those in need.

In honor of Black History Month, we asked Eliana to reflect on what, in this moment, being African American means to her - and how this shapes his work at The Community Foundation, and beyond.

“Being an African American in this moment means having to negotiate for our humanity. Although we’ve seen attacks against the African American community in the past, it’s blatantly being shown now. It’s been hard and demoralizing watching people who look like me constantly being attacked. 

Even with all of this going on, it has shown me just how strong the African American community is and I’m proud to be a part of it. Seeing a powerful and well respected woman of color lead The Community Foundation gives me hope that I too can have a seat at the table.”

Community Foundation Welcomes ‘Community Builder’ to Leadership Team, Celebrates New Staff and Staff Promotions

We are thrilled to welcome Ronnie Galvin as our new Managing Director for Community Investment. Ronnie oversees The Community Foundation team responsible for community leadership and discretionary funding programs, leading with his experience in and passion for racial equity and reparative justice. Below, hear from Ronnie on his dedication to community building and inspiration for joining The Community Foundation.

I am a community builder. This is the case in my personal and professional life. This essential part of my identity emerges from growing up in a tightly knit, self-determined, mutually supportive and accountable Black community in Miami, Florida. It was a place where elders were revered; every child was cherished; there was no such thing as hunger or homelessness; and every Black life not only mattered, but was celebrated and exalted.

I was birthed and raised in a Black working class family. My father professionally served 22 years as an enlisted airman in the United States Air Force. My mother was a domestic worker—herself coming from a long line of Black women deemed as the 'helping class.' They are now in the realm of the ancestors among many who provide counsel, inspiration, and protection for me as I come to this work. 

I do this work in a space that has already been opened by my partner, soulmate, and collaborator—Dr. Yanique Redwood, President and CEO of the Consumer Health Foundation. She is the fiercest, most tenacious, and consistent freedom fighter, lover of our people and lover of me that I know. We co-parent two young-adult children, Alana and Darren, who are both finding their way in the world.  

This feeling and experience of community is what inspires me.  It has enriched my life beyond my wildest dreams and deepest longings. I am compelled to build and share this same experience with the Greater Washington Community Foundation Family, across the DMV region, and wherever our work takes us in this country and on the planet.

New Operations and Accounting Staff

Over the past few months, we’ve welcomed several new staff members to The Community Foundation family! We are excited to work with…  

  • Marcus BraxtonManaging Director for Operations. Marcus joined the organization in December 2020, and leads The Community Foundation’s work to enhance its internal operations, systems, and processes to ensure the organization has the infrastructure needed to continue its success and impact. We’ll feature more on Marcus in the new year, so stay tuned!

  • Akista Haywood, Staff Accountant. Akista is responsible for the payroll and supporting the Accounting staff. She has over 20 years of Accounting and Payroll experience, coming to The Community Foundation from JSI where she was Payroll Manager. 

Celebrating New Staff Roles

Several Community Foundation staff have also been promoted to new roles in the organization! Please join us in congratulating:

  • Melen Hagos, Senior Manager for External Affairs. In her new role, Melen helps build partnerships in the community, leading a variety of initiatives, including programs and grantmaking initiatives, and identifying key community alliances that will move The Community Foundation's work forward. Melen joined The Community Foundation in 2017 as a Community Investment Associate where she coordinated all competitive and discretionary grantmaking across the region.

  • Kathy Matthews, Director, Grants Management. In her new role as Director, she oversees all financial and administrative operations and functions of grant awards–and is responsible for financial reporting, budget oversight and grants compliance. She has held several prior positions within The Community Foundation that include Receptionist, Grants Management Associate, and Grants Manager.

  • Benton Murphy, Senior Advisor for Impact. Previously as AVP for Community Investment, Benton led The Community Foundation’s VoicesDMV initiative and managed a set of endowed funds, including the Spring Creek Fund, Joshua Community Fund, Catalyst Fund and LGBTQ+ Fund for Philanthropy. With more than a dozen years of experience in the nonprofit and philanthropic sectors, he also provides advisory services to donors and staff on effective grantmaking practices.

  •  Brittany Owens, Community Impact Associate. Brittany is the Technical Lead for grant applications, co-leads our racial equity and inclusion work, and provides support for fundraising with foundations. In previous roles, Brittany has gained experience lobbying and being a case manager with nonprofit organizations. 

  • Danielle Yates, Managing Director of Marketing and Communications. Danielle joined The Community Foundation in 2017 and brings more than 15 years experience leading marketing and communications programs for nonprofit associations. She leads the strategic vision and oversees tactical implementation of all communications and marketing programs across the organization.

Community Foundation Welcomes New Advisory Board Members in Prince George’s County

The Greater Washington Community Foundation welcomes Joy Russell, Trey Proctor, David Iannucci, and Paul Monterio to its Prince George’s County Advisory Board. These individuals join a diverse group of passionate and dedicated advisory board members. They, along with their colleagues, are responsible for advising The Community Foundation on the challenges and opportunities specific to Prince George’s County, and sharing their knowledge on issues of community leadership for greater impact.

“These individuals share our deep commitment to improving the quality of life for Prince George’s County residents, and their work very much aligns with our goals to increase philanthropy and ensure equity and economic mobility,” said Amina Anderson, senior director for Prince George’s County at The Community Foundation. “We are honored they have chosen to serve the county by working with The Community Foundation, and we look forward to partnering with them so that each and every Prince Georgian has an opportunity to achieve their full potential.”

David Iannuci, President and CEO of the Prince George’s County Economic Development Corporation

David Iannuci was appointed as president and CEO of the Prince George’s County Economic Development Corporation in December 2018, under County Executive Angela Alsobrooks. David oversees the County’s $50 million Economic Development Incentive Fund, which has leveraged over $1.1 Billion in private sector investments. He has played a prominent role with the County’s key initiatives such as the pursuit of the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation headquarters, the new University of Maryland Medical Center, the Purple Line, and multiple Transit Oriented Development projects. David has served in many positions within state and local government. His previous positions include assistant deputy chief administrative officer for economic development, Secretary of the Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development, executive director of the Baltimore County Department of Economic Development, and under former Maryland Governor William Donald Schaefer, Chief Legislative Officer. David is a graduate of the University of Maryland School Of Law, a member of the Maryland Bar, and a graduate of the University of Maryland College Park. A long-time resident of Prince George's County, he resides in Bowie with his wife and daughter.


Joy Russell, Chief of Staff, Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks

Joy Russell is a senior level executive with over 20 years of local government affairs, stakeholder engagement and management experience, directing major government, corporate, and nonprofit strategies and initiatives. Prior to her current role with Prince George’s County, Joy founded Jonathan Arnold Consulting in 2014 to work with clients with strategic advisory and stakeholder management needs. Joy also served as the SVP for community impact at the United Way of the National Capital Area where she led an annual social investment strategy of approximately $2.5 million dollars. Prior to joining United Way, Joy was vice president for external relations at the National Capital Revitalization Corporation (NCRC), where she played a key role in re-positioning the economic development organization with both government and business audiences. Joy began her political career in Washington DC's Mayor Anthony Williams' Administration. She was the Mayor's deputy chief of staff for community affairs, where she was responsible for the management of stakeholder and constituency relationships in the promotion of the Mayor's strategic goals and priorities. Joy holds a law degree from the University of Maryland and undergraduate degrees in political science and public administration from James Madison University.

Paul Monteiro, Chief of Staff and Assistant Vice President of External Affairs, Howard University

Paul Monteiro is a proud graduate of Prince George's County Public Schools (PGCPS) having attended Adelphi Elementary, Buck Lodge Middle, and High Point High. He now serves as an At-Large member of the PGCPS Board of Education and Vice Chair of its Academic Affairs Committee. Paul worked at the United States Supreme Court and later served in the Capitol Hill office of Senator Barack Obama before transitioning to his presidential campaign headquarters. In 2009, Paul joined the White House staff as an associate director of the Office of Public Engagement and coordinator of the My Brother’s Keeper mentorship program for young men attending local high schools. President Obama later appointed him as the national director of AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America). In 2015, Attorney General Loretta Lynch designated him as head of the Community Relations Service at the U.S. Department of Justice. He is an incoming member of Leadership Greater Washington and on the Board of Governors of Wesley Theological Seminary. He is also a proud graduate of the University of Maryland and Howard University School of Law.

Gregory “Trey” Proctor, III, Vice President of G.S. Proctor & Associates, Inc.

Trey Proctor, III, has been with G.S. Proctor since June 2014. In those five years, he has emerged as a real asset in local, state and federal lobbying areas; particularly as it relates to areas of Energy, Utilities, Transportation and Infrastructure, Healthcare, Zoning and Permitting, and the many other client interests of G.S. Proctor. Trey graduated from Elon University with a BS in business administration with a marketing concentration and dual minors in economics and international studies. He immediately began his career as a Credit Analyst at Old Line Bank. Before being promoted to an Assistant Vice President position, Trey assisted the credit department in analyzing potential clients and loans and assisting with the real property valuations process. Trey has a strong commitment to community involvement and—in addition to contributing countless hours to community service efforts with Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Heart of America, and the Alice Ferguson Foundation—serves on the Board of Directors for the College of Southern Maryland Foundation, Historic Sotterley and Leadership Prince George’s. He lives in Accokeek with his wife, Charlita, and their two daughters, Zauriel and Simile.

Community Foundation Welcomes Racial Equity Expert to Board, Bids Farewell to Longest Standing Member

Dr. Rashawn Ray, Brookings Institution Fellow, Professor & Executive Director at the University of Maryland

Dr. Rashawn Ray, a David M. Rubenstein Fellow in Governance Studies at The Brookings Institution, is Professor of Sociology and Executive Director of the Lab for Applied Social Science Research (LASSR) at the University of Maryland, College Park. He is also one of the co-editors of Contexts Magazine: Sociology for the Public. Formerly, Ray was a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health Policy Research Scholar at the University of California, Berkeley.

Dr. Ray’s research addresses the mechanisms that manufacture and maintain racial and social inequality with a particular focus on police-civilian relations and men’s treatment of women. His work also speaks to ways that inequality may be attenuated through racial uplift activism and social policy.

He has written for the New York Times, Newsweek, Huffington Post, and NBC News – and, has published over 50 books, articles, book chapters, and nearly 20 op-eds. Selected as 40 Under 40 Prince George's County and awarded the 2016 UMD Research Communicator Award, Ray has appeared on C-SPAN, MSNBC, HLN, Al Jazeera, NPR, and Fox News.

Recently, we were excited to feature Dr. Ray in our inaugural VoicesDMV Social Justice Town Hall, presented by Wells Fargo: From Grief to Action, a conversation about racial justice and the concrete ways we can take action to support the black community. 

 “Hate groups in particular have increased in the United States by up to 100%. What we have to realize is there is a continuum of racial hate – and that is embedded in our social institutions. I am committed to moving us towards the needle of racial equity,” said Dr. Ray.


 Dan Mayers

This fall, we bid a bittersweet farewell to Dan Mayers, the longest standing member of our Board of Trustees. Dan previously served as Chair of the Board of Trustees and of the Governance Board of The Community Foundation’s September 11 Survivors’ Fund. He also served as board chair of the Harvard Law School Visiting Committee, Legal Action Center, National Child Research Center, National Symphony Orchestra, Sidwell Friends School, and WETA.

Dan and his wife Karen credit The Community Foundation with informing their philanthropy and introducing them to the region’s most effective nonprofits going back many years.

More and more, they have focused their philanthropy on groups serving low-income individuals and families. Dan helped to guide The Community Foundation’s Neighbors in Need Fund, established during the recession to strengthen the region’s safety-net providers and services, and the couple were major donors to the fund.

Together we can end homelessness

In 2018, in an incredibly gracious act, Dan donated $100,000 to begin the Dan and Karen Mayers’ Challenge. The Challenge aimed to raise $1 million for the Partnership to End Homelessness. We are thrilled to announce that we met the $1 million challenge during the first year of the Partnership. 

“In the past, homelessness was seen as an intractable problem,” says Dan. “Today, we have the leadership, tools, plan, and political will to end homelessness. The only thing missing is critical resources.”

“This is what community foundations do—they respond to community need,” adds Dan. “Time and again, I’ve witnessed The Community Foundation galvanize the generosity of concerned residents. I’ve seen compassionate people rally around urgent community needs, from natural disasters to 9/11 to the recession.”

We are so grateful to have worked with Dan, and for his years of service. Thank you for your investment in bettering our community.
